Worth upgrading my CM Hyper 212+?

Thread Starter
I have the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ and an Intel i5 2500k oc'd to 4.6GHz. When I run Prime95, my average temp is like 55C, give or take a few.
Now just wondering, if it is worth spending $50-$100 on another cooler.

Thanks wink.gif .

If you're on a budget then no. I mean a H100 or a D14 would be better but for the same temp you're looking at 100 maybe 200 MHz increase in CPU frequency. Is that what you want?

See if you can get anymore out of the chip and if its getting too hot under the 212, you are the only one who can judge it really.

I can get 4.7ghz easily, and 4.8 probably easy, too.
Temps would still probably be good with temps around 57-70C. I could probably also get 5.0GHz if I wanted but I don't want to burn out my chip with voltags over 1.4 lolz.

EDIT: BTW, too hot for me is 80C and over.

A better cooler gives you either better temps or less noise with similar temps, so at the end of the day...

You don't need to make 2 threads about the same thing http://www.overclock.net/t/1286022/what-cooler-should-i-get/0_50. Only you can decide, we can't make the decision for you

you may have the best cooler in the world. heck even full water cooling system!!! but if your motherboard and psu aren't the best ... then it will easily hinder your cpu OC.

for example i had the UD4 board... and always stuck at 4.5 ghz no matter what cooler / voltages i throw at it.. it just won't go any higher... than i slap the cpu into the Gene-z board... bam! 5.0 ghz stable on prime95 ...

So its best if you want to tell us what motherboard / psu you have. So we will know what is hindering you from going higher. that begin said... 4.5 ghz OC is the normal for everyone, and anything over that is just waste of time/power... you won't see a difference at all in any application/games unless you are very e-peen for benchmarks / scores.

i say 100 buxs for another cooler to get 4.5 + (which is motherboard dependent by then) ... is a waste of money IMO. Spend that money on a SSD or couple of games!

also its cpu dependent too..depends on the luck you got on your batch.... some ppl no matter what cant get higher than 4.5-4.8 ghz... heck some are even stuck at 4.2ghz i have read...

so once again is it worth all that hassle/money to get 0.1-0.5 ghz???

I went from a 212 to a SA mostly for the 'WoW Factor' and I dont really regret it.

If you are to buy another cooler i'd settle for only a high end cooler since otherwise you wont see ANY differences with the 212.
If you want best noise/performance go for a D14, SA etc.

If you dont care about the noise and to pay 20$ more go for the H100, it perform a bit better than the air coolers at max settings but it's a lot noisier.
I recommend it because IMO it looks reallllyyyyy nice.
