At the time, Apple NEEDED the cash, and got it by Microsoft purchasing non-voting shares, plus they got assurance that Office would be supported on the Mac.
Of course, Microsoft did this for selfish reasons also since keeping Apple alive meant they weren't sole provider of an OS for computers. They also had the anti-trust suits to deal with over IE. Apple also agreed to drop their lawsuits against Microsoft for "copying" Mac OS. More importantly, what Microsoft wanted was IE to be the default browser on the Mac. Netscape at the time had 25% of their users coming from Mac.
And yes, Apple DID need Steve Jobs to rescue the company, it was Sculley's stupidity for firing him in the first place. Apparently, being fired was the best thing to happen to Steve Jobs though, as he came back more creative and driven.
In the end, it was a win-win situation for both companies.

The intent is right the time line is off..the nescape/mozilla/IE/antitrust were a few years later. Netscape had the Mac browser business because there was no native browser in system 1-9 for a little bit there IE shipped as part of OS 7 I believe.

No Apple bought the GUI with Pre-IPO stock

Um wow. After reading this thread all the way through i stared into my screen for a few moments and... *blink, blink*.

I've heard of being brand loyal but this is crazy. What i get from this is Steve Jobs and Apple/Mac are jesus himself while Microsoft is pure evil that owe every molecule of sucess now, the past and future from stealing everything from Mac. If you try to tell me any different it's *covers ears* "La-la-la-la-la, I can't hear you la-la-la".

From what i can see you'd have a better chance of teaching quantum physics to a rock then convincing this Nope oo guy that Apple could possibly for an instant in any reality known and unknown be in the slightest shade of grey, let alone be in the wrong ever.

I think of someone looking at their TV or monitor and imagining being able to have that, in the palm of your hand. Wow, tablets/smartphones design right there... So they copied Apple too right?

Wait... Rectangular tablet with rounded corners, used to display information on its surface... I know someone who's been looking for you Steve. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

That's for the factfinders to decide. I think their litigation position is so untenable that they might get bumped in the Summary Judgement phase. All in all, poor form by Apple.

Pointing out wrong statements posted in this thread doesn't mean I'm loyal to any brand. If people want to try and re-write history and pat each other on the back with their made up stories, then so be it. Apple has certainly made their share of crappy products and poor business decisions that there shouldn't bee a need to invent a new version of events to criticize them though.

BTW, no one truly understand quantum physics anyways. Anyone who tells you they do is lying; physics being my field of study.

This made me chuckle, its not really "copying" if they had a license to use their technology.

Microsoft was forced into a license deal after Windows 1.0 was released. They did not have a license to copy Apple originally. When Windows 2.0 was released, Apple argued that they were using more than they had originally agreed to. Apple obviously never envisioned Microsoft growing to be an actual competitor when they originally signed that agreement.

Yes to the first 2, no to the second - but only because they have hideous, tiny keys. Take the keyboard away and slide the main buttons down to the bottom of the screen and you have a rectangle smartphone with rounded corners that also looks similar to the iPhone, what is your point? Anyone with any sense would not confuse a samsung smartphone with the iPhone.

Similar is a point of view, I dont get how you can patent that. Like many have said, its the reason why the shape of HDTVs isnt patented. They look similar and have similar features.

I would have put all of these replies in one post, but im reading this thread bit by bit at work.
