Of course, Microsoft did this for selfish reasons also since keeping Apple alive meant they weren't sole provider of an OS for computers. They also had the anti-trust suits to deal with over IE. Apple also agreed to drop their lawsuits against Microsoft for "copying" Mac OS. More importantly, what Microsoft wanted was IE to be the default browser on the Mac. Netscape at the time had 25% of their users coming from Mac.
And yes, Apple DID need Steve Jobs to rescue the company, it was Sculley's stupidity for firing him in the first place. Apparently, being fired was the best thing to happen to Steve Jobs though, as he came back more creative and driven.
In the end, it was a win-win situation for both companies.

The intent is right the time line is off..the nescape/mozilla/IE/antitrust were a few years later. Netscape had the Mac browser business because there was no native browser in system 1-9 for a little bit there IE shipped as part of OS 7 I believe.
