Random shutdowns, restarts, surges, turning on and off by itself...oh my

I bought all my components about a year ago and overclocked my i5-2500k to 4.5 GHz. After running many stress tests to assure stability, I called it good and everything worked great since. However, lately my PC has been shutting off randomly when their is no load (just browsing the web). One time I noticed the bios screen say something about a surge and ASUS protection had been activated. Finally, the situation degraded to where the computer was shutting itself off and on every few seconds before posting.

My first thought was bad PSU or maybe MB. Slowly I removed components to troubleshoot. To make a long story short, after re-seating the 24 pin connection, everything works great again. Even if I giggle it there is no interruption.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I just pretend it never happened?

If reseating the connection fixed it, it's probably OK. Do you have it plugged into some kind of surge protector? My guess, though, is if it wasn't even POSTing for a while, and reseating the main power cable seemed to fix it, that was probably your only issue.

I would double check all of the other connections, though, just to be thorough.

Sounds like a bad case of chip creep. The gradual expansion and contraction of computer components as they get hot and cold over the days, months, years. I noticed you live in Minnesota where it obviously reaches very low temperatures which could have helped exaggerate the level of quirks.

Yay for Minnesota! I'm always on the lookout for those quirks. Thanks for the help and I just wanted to update on the situation.

It turns out that it was not the connection after all. The restarting problems etc. did continue after a little while. I tried a different PSU for a couple of days and it has been fine.

In conclusion, it was just a bad power supply. Corsair is going to replace it for free (5 year warranty). I have always had great luck with Corsair support.

Thanks again
