XP is not the issue, and no. I definitely could not "just re-download the game." I've tried it, many times with no success. Only reinstalling Windows fresh after a re-format was the solution. I believe it had something to do with uplay or something ubisoft integrated in the game, because before reinstalling I had a similar problem with Assasin's Creed (Freezing, etc) and upon reinstalling windows, that was gone too.
The demo caused a problem I could not fix, so for all of you out there who are looking to potentially avoid this problem, make sure you first manually un-install the demo before purchasing and downloading/installing the full game.
