FX-8120. 8 series or 9 series?

Hello,

Currently I have a 7 series setup for my FX 8120 which wasn't a good idea as the VRMS start to overheat. Default settings and it still overheats so yea, time to upgrade..... there wasn't even VRM heatsinks but to overclock this system so that I can start encoding.

Anyway so I was looking at the 9 series and it looks like there are lot of setups which I could go. Most ASUS setups over 70 pounds have the VRMs covered which is good but then it kinda dawned onto me... what does the 8 series do which the 9 series doesn't. There is plenty of Bulldozer support now and it's just flashing the BIOS so that's pretty simple but I want to overclock pretty dam well. Is it worth the extra 20 pounds. It has the same VRM heatsinks but is it the power phasing which makes the 9 series better to overclock with.

there are some good mobos out there in the amd 9 series. the cheapest one that has an 8+2 Power phase design is the GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3, and they are heatsinked vrms, so i wouldnt worry about cooling or overheating. it is about 115 USD, or ~70ish pounds.

It can be, but the amount of overclockability is ultimately up the the processor. You could have a $1000 board but the chip may max out the same on a $120 board.

are you saying that just because it is expensive? like selectstriker2 said, you could have the best mobo made, but you could get the same overclock out of a cheap one because the actual processor cant overclock well. and besides i would say the asrock fatal1ty is the best overclocker.

Only 9 series are designed for FX.Stick with the 9 series.Older series where not designed for FX architecture.Get one with a 8+2 VRM design like Biostar 990FX,Gigabyte 990FX,Asus M5A97 Pro/EVO or better.

Id recomend the Sabertooth it over clocks just as well as a Corsshair V and it just when on sale on New egg at 165.00 is a awsome price

9 series + FX boards for sure(990FX). Just want to be clear on the VRMs in this list.

Biostar: 4+1
Asus Pro/Evo: 6+2
Gigabyte: 8+2 thumb.gif

Or better as previously stated. Always check with the manufacturer concerning specs.
