Crysis and Metro 2033 do not fake ANYTHING, all the lighting, everything is REAL TIME and no pre backed or pre-computed like all the other games.
That's why they require a lot of GPU power...

They're still poorly optimized to some extent. Metro 2033's "Advanced DOF" setting causes a huge FPS drop for no good reason... the best depth of field setting in Crysis looks much better and causes no such drop. Crysis can't do huge maps very well, the performance drop is too great compared to ArmA 2 which has a 225 km^2 map and up to 10000m view distance. Better looking maps in CryEngine 3 run much better than Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and Metro 2033 showing that optimization could be better in Metro / Crysis.

I'm sorry but I have Arma 2 and it's draw distance may be greater but it's environments are a lot more sparse of trees and other foliage compared to Crysis.

Crysis don't for get is from 2007, a time when dual cores were king which limits draw distance and other things as 2 cores can only handle so many API draw calls, a problem that Cryengine 3 doesn't have.

The Chernarus map is full of vegetation, plus far more objects, terrain, and AI to render. Dual cores certainly were more common among enthusiast gamers back then, but quad cores were still out and not terribly rare.

Also, for those talking about DX10 in Crysis, it hardly makes a difference. Just like DX11 effects are hardly used in Metro 2033 and BF3. You know it's possible to look at the "best graphics everr" thing with a less opinionated view. Ask something like "Which game best replicates its type of environment?" Crysis does a heck of a job replicating a tropical island, google "Crysis vs real life" and you'll see. The pics you'll find are actually Alpha or Beta build Crysis, and it actually looks better now. Also most mods don't improve visual realism, instead they give a more artistic touch with their Time of Day settings. Something like "Real-lifesys" or whatever is good for realism.
MW3 is set in urban environments and looks terrible. Low polygon objects everywhere, outdated shaders, crap textures, bad mapping and no newer mapping techniques, terrible character models, poor colors/time of day settings, static light even, terrible shadows, the list goes on. Metro 2033 looks good, but compared to Crysis suffers from inferior textures, worse/less dynamic lighting system, terrible vegetation, worse depth of field / general post processing, it only has better particles than Crysis. People just fall for its style; its level design, atmosphere, and presentation. They're amazed when you approach a set of doors, not knowing what's behind it, and it opens up revealing a ridiculous amount of light and bloom. They love The Witcher 2's graphics for the same reason, they never mention its terrible anti-aliasing and view distance.

LOL !! DX11 effects !? Texture size ?! Do you think I care about those things ?

Wii doesn't even support DX9, and yet many games looks very good when it is running on HD resolution using dolphin emulator. I'm playing Donkey Kong Country Returns on dolphin right now, and the game looks stunning. Even if the game use outdated graphic technology it still looks good when you look at it on the screen.

Dx11 and texture resolution is not only thing that make games looks better. Environment, colors, and art design are also important.

If you bring 20 random people from street and show them Crysis (with no mods) against crysis 2. I willing to bet than most would say that crysis 2 looks better. I willing even to bet that some of them are going to say modern warfare 3 looks better than crysis 1

I feel that graphics quality is vastly overrated. I found both Crysis games to be a bit lame to be honest. It was a little fun running around killing AI for a short time but pretty much the whole game felt "uninspired". I forced myself to finish them but I don't feel compelled to play them again unlike many other games that I enjoyed quite a bit. Different strokes, I guess tongue.gif

I fail to see your point in quoting my post. You seem to think that somewhere I said those two things are the most important to visual quality? As for your final sentence, nobody without poor vision and/or some sort of disorder would say that. smile.gif

Well I just jumped into Crysis 2, and the first thing I noticed was how much smoother and fluent the game felt. It has a really nice Title screen and Pause screen.

And as for the graphics, I was simply amazed, they were WAY above what I was expecting, they have really done a wonderful job with this sequel!
