Get a refund! Coolmax is totally junk!

Give the replacement PSU a chance, because it will save time and money. Plus, the LEDs are cool.

I was building a computer for my cousin, and I had finished putting it all together, so I finally hit the power switch to turn it on... And nothing happens. I open it up and re-check all the cables; everything is completely fine. I shrug and then pull out the coolmax power supply and hook up a spare OCZ power supply that I had lying around. Computer turns out without any problems at all.

Talked to newegg and they're going to send me a replacement since the first was obviously DOA. I am starting to wonder if I really made the wrong choice by buying this thing, though. My cousin needed a PC for cheap and his system is not going to draw much power. He really only wanted that PSU because of the blue LED and because it was within his budget.

Do you think I really have to worry about it frying his mobo or anything like that? What would Coolmax/Newegg do if that happened? I think I have the opportunity to take a refund on newegg. Will there be a penalty for this and should I do it?

The power supply is this one:

Get it refunded. There will be a 15% restocking fee.

Buy a Corsair CX430v2. It's a superior power supply in almost every respect.

My cousin really wants a power supply with LEDs. Maybe I should just grab a plain PSU and attach another LED fan to the side of the case? I guess that would look just as good.

LEDs look cool for the first year of your computer hobby. Then they look tacky. Then they look awful. He'll regret making LEDs a part of his requirements for a power supply after his ugly, glitzy, LED-laden CoolMax or Raidmax or whatever fails catastrophically a year or two from now.

Well, it's certainly not the first year of my hobby. My PC has LEDs that can be turned off. smile.gif
I'll call Newegg tomorrow, and if they haven't sent anything yet, I'll try getting a PSU from a more trustworthy company.
I just don't understand why this thing has four eggs on newegg if it is truly as terrible as everyone says it is.
My cousin is the impatient type and he'll be unhappy when things don't go his way exactly.

Oh well. I told him we should have just gone with a regular PSU to begin with anyhow!

Because most people don't know anything about power supplies. They get it, plug it in, and if it turns on say, "Yay, 5 stars". But since most people buy a 750W for a 300W system, they won't notice when their 750W turns out to be a 350-450W power supply (like that Coolmax).

Trust me, I work in this industry.

Yeah, that certainly is true. Most power supplies are total crap. I'll never forget when I first had to change a power supply!
I was in the fourth grade and I wanted a new graphics card for our crappy Dell. Little did I realize that Dell's old power supply wasn't
supplying anywhere close to what it was rated for!

Begging Newegg for a refund now. It says they waive the 15% restock fee if the product was damaged. I wonder if I can get the waive?

Actually, power supplies have, on average, greatly improved in quality over the last five years or so due to an increase in consumer awareness. However, there's still crap out there waiting for someone who prioritizes price over not exploding.

Managed to get the CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 600W with 15% off AND a 20$ rebate.
Ended up with a better deal in the end anyway! smile.gif
Final price was 55$ and 35$ after the rebate. Great deal.
Purchased two blue LED CoolerMaster fans instead, which also have rebates.

If all my rebates come in, this will have been a great refunding experience! smile.gif
Thanks, guys.

I agree with what Phaedrus said, and I'll vouch for his industry experience ;-) though he runs a game studio now.
