7850 nightmare

Friend built a rig recently. Everything was working when he left my place after I helped him assemble it.

So he gets home and tries to play dead island/skyrim today and he said there were various glitches which made the games unplayable.

He tried to follow this post right here http://www.overclock.net/t/1237313/sapphire-7870-driver-issue but,unfortunately, he was having some problems following it since he didn't see options that were suggested in the CCC.

So I suggested trying the 12.7 beta drivers to see if perhaps the issues were fixed. Now his mouse doesn't work and I am not sure what to tell him.

has he made sure the video out is plugged into the graphics card.

He managed to get it working and decided to call it quits for the night, I'll have him post his build tomorrow when he tries to get it to actually play games I think.

Did a system restore and got my PC to actually work, but am still having issues with the Graphics driver crashing during certain games.

Running all of this on Win7 64bit. There doesn't seem to be any overheating issues according to the monitors.I have read elsewhere that there were similar issues with the 7xxx series having crashes, but I didn't think it was this bad.The game will run for about 5 minutes then 1 of 2 things will happen. Either the screen will just completely freeze and about a minute then resume, or the screen will freeze and have a bunch of distortion on it (Kind of like raindrops going across the screen). The game audio still plays as this happens.

I have tried updating to the most recent drivers, going to beta drivers, going to the 12.3 drivers...none of those have worked so far.

I read on another forum that a guy had problems with the 7870. What he did was he went in and noticed that the GPU was alternating between 300mhz and 1000mhz. He wrote a guide on how to fix it, but since then the Catalyst Control Center has been updated. Does anyone know of a way to edit the speeds with the current version of CCC?

Ok, so I have just gotten over this myself with a 7850. It was horrible, and it would only happen during certain things. In my case it was every time I'd try to play Skyrim. After a bunch of reading and believing that people actually tried a clean install of drivers I finally decided to try that simple and menial troubleshooting step. It seems to have worked amazingly for me. Immediately after uninstalling the graphics card I restarted, then I ran cCleaner and removed all sights of ATI anything. Then restarted, and then installed the new 12.8 drivers. One more restore and then I installed the 1.7 update for Skryim and I have been playing for hours.

I kept worrying that it was my card and that I would have to RMA it.

Make sure to fully uninstall the previous drivers with a program like driver sweeper etc.
