Shoddy Unbalanced Samsung Hard Drives?

I used to think that Samsung's HD103SJ drives were very quiet, but I was using elastic suspension back then so that might explain it. With my new set, I've been having issues in all kinds of cases/mounts. Seeking is still very quiet, the problem is the noise generated by the spinning disks - a low vibration that slowly and evenly fluctuates (pulsing, about 5 seconds per 'cycle'):

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

With a lot of these drives together it's really bad, and I thought that it was that each drive had a slightly different frequency of vibration and that together they somehow cause some kind of resonance, but I've been trying the drives individually and the issue is still there. I'm running them externally (isolated from the case), even in an Antec P183 HDD cage that has those thick silicone grommets (the best stock HDD isolation system I've ever encountered in a case), and these drives are still generating this awful vibration. All four of them. They're practically brand new.

Now as I said, my first lot of HD103SJs I had a while ago, were mostly suspended, but I did have one mounted in a Lian Li case with pretty poor quality isolating mounts and I don't remember having any issues from that drive. The other thing worth noting about my first set of HD103SJs is that they were all Korean made.

The HD103SJs have been being manufactured in China for a while now (my current set included), and I've noticed (just from forums etc.) that there seems to be an increased failure rate since this switch and maybe my issue with vibration is another side effect. Who else has recently purchased any HD103SJ (or other 'Samsung' drives), and are you noticing any issues with vibration?

As it stands, I wouldn't recommend these drives to anyone anymore. I've tried them in a variety of cases with different mounting systems, and every time they've been unreasonably loud.

Hello there

I own several SAMSUNG F3 1TB's and I have the same problem. But, mine has done and acted in the same way nearly since they first entered the market tongue.gif. Mine are still rocking strong, so I wouldn't worry about it. You grow accustomed to it soon.

Pretty major design flaw if you ask me. And as I mentioned, it's much worse when you have an array of, say, four of the drives. We just had that thread about vibration's effect on drive operation - well, this is significant vibration. I tried four of them in a Silverstone LC-17 case where the drive just screws directly onto a steel cage, and the drone of the drives was clearly audible from the next room.
