16GB vs. 8GB of RAM for Ivy/Kepler build

Thread Starter
Hey there,
doing an IvyKepler build for myself this summer. This build is going to last me the next 4 years and then I will be doing another big upgrade for college/university.

The setup will look something like this:
i7 3770k
ASUS Z77 Sabertooth
Corsair H100 + 2x Corsair SP120
Gigabyte GTX 670 2GB Windforce
Samsung 830 128GB
Corsair AX650
Corsair 500R

Initially I planned on getting 8GB 1866MHz RAM from Corsair. But I started to think about getting two of these kits and having 16GB for "futureproofness" as this build will last me 4 years.

So what are your opinions on this? For the money spared on RAM I could get a better case or something (by the way, any suggestions are welcome).

Thanks in advance

A.T

RAM is super cheap, and will continue to be. Use current plan and stay with 8GB, and upgrade to 16 GB later on. 16GB isn't really worth it for consumers in most cases today.

Buy two 2x 4GB now so you don't have to toss old RAM bricks later when upgrading.

A schmexier case would suit you good instead smile.gif.

Get Samsung WonderRAM.. It's better and smaller, probably cheaper too! wink.gif
It saved me today with my cooler, it JUST fits under the first fan. I'd suggest either these, OR go with a 16GB kit (2x8GB sticks). This makes less stress on the IMC and it also allows you to add more RAM in total if you ever need 32GB (you probably wont, but who knows.)

I'd suggest a 750W PSU, just to be on the safe side, I take it you're recycling the HDD from your current build too?
I'd also suggest a Silver Arrow SB-E, NH-D14, NZXT Havik or Phanteks over that H100. But if you want a CLC (Closed loop cooler) go for the H100. thumb.gif

Also, you've got the right idea of memory with the 1866 kits. 1866 is where it's at for Ivy bridge performance, you really want timings of 10-10-10-28 or less also, a bit more doesn't hurt though.

Thanks for the quick replies.

In my country, RAM is relatively expensive. The 16GB cost about 120 €

And what is this case you are talking about?

@ above the 8GB kit costs about 70 € in my country.

Use this www.heureka.sk to browse through products.

About the RAM upgrade later is not a choice. My dad made it clear to me that he doesn't want to hear about computers for the next 4 years (he is the one funding my expenses).

More isn't always better, sometimes it's just... more.

In all seriousness though, I guess it depends what you want to do with your PC. For most people 8Gb should be enough (I personally have 2x4Gb Corsair Vengeance) but am also thinking about getting another 2 to end up at 16Gb.

Up to now I have never filled all 8Gb, so maybe it is better to spend the money on other parts and then if you ever find that you need more RAM buy another 2 modules (it's not like they're that expensive, especially as time goes by). That way you do not waste resources on something you might not need now.

If you have no real need for 16GB I'd stick with 8. Sure, RAM Is cheap and the extra 8 may not be much more, but you may not use it at all.

I originally purchased my 16GB planning to run a RAMDisk to load my games onto before playing them, but I'm running a 32-bit OS at the moment because I don't like Windows 7.

Aside from 3D Rendering, Intense multitasking, and using a RAMDisk you most likely won't benefit from having more than 8GB.

You've got to have a real need to get that much ram, or it'll go mostly unused.

Assuming I get the 8GB only, where should I invest the rest of the money?

The prices are here:

Intel i7 3770k € 325.39
Corsair H100 € 103.00
Asus Z77 Sabertooth € 199.00
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1866MHz CL9 € 59.95
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 Windforce x3 € 413.99
Samsung SH-222BB € 15.46
Western Digital Green 1TB SATAII - Already have
Samsung 830 128GB € 99.99
Corsair AX650 € 141.11
Corsair Carbide 500R € 94.06
Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition 2x € 23.48

Total € 1,475.43

Budget is up to 1500 € (if there is something better that might cost a bit more than my dad is willing to go above this budget.)

I have a monitor already: ASUS VH242 23.5". I have a classical black Microsoft mouse and Keyboard, which I love to use.

Should I get the Storm Trooper Case? It costs 129 € right now.
