New 26-27" TV/monitor for <=$250 USD

A buddy of mine is looking to buy a new TV. Because his living space is limited, he's also wanting something that can double as a computer monitor. The budget is set at $250 USD, shipped. (Can't be much fudging on that.) Because it's going to be used as a TV, he was kind of hoping for something in the 26-27" range, but I don't know that a TV at that size and price point would necessarily make a decent monitor. If a monitor in this price/size range is more feasible than a TV, I might be able to convince him to get a monitor instead and then watch TV through a tuner attached to his computer.

I'd loan him the extra $50 to get one of those awesome Korean monitors, but unfortunately his compy is a little too dated to run dual-link DVI -- or even single-link DVI for that matter. So the display will have to be VGA-friendly for the time being. Anyway, with all the constraints and requirements for the display, I know it won't be the best thing out there, but I'm just looking for something that can be adequate on all fronts to someone who's not too big of a connoisseur when it comes to displays. Any suggestions you guys can offer in this balancing act? Thanks in advance.

You will not get a good computer experience using a 27" with 1080p. It's horrid.

So I would advise your friend to invest it in medium-end 24", and since theyre relatively cheap he could also buy another non-FullHD TV for the extra cash aswell.

Or just get a TV tuner + monitor like you said yourselves.

I'm sure others will say the 27" TV's are not good for gaming/computer use tongue.gif.

For the sake of being perfectly clear, I'd better make sure I understand exactly what you were saying.

Did you mean:

Yeah, I couldn't find anything that looked too promising for a computer monitor when shopping for 27" TVs. I'm not really sure that a 1080p monitor of that size would bug him -- like I said he's really not a connoisseur -- so pending the clarification of the above quote, I'm still wondering if a 27" monitor might work out. Keep in mind he's really shopping for something he can watch TV on first and use as a monitor second. The best game his computer can handle is probably Starcraft (and I'm not talking about Starcraft 2) so you can kind of get an idea of how important (or not) computer gaming is to him right now. There might be an upgrade down the road so that he can play something somewhat modern, but that's a ways off.

So, assuming the first quote had your intended meaning, what about something like the Panasonic VIERA TC-L24X5?
Or, assuming the second quote had your intended meaning, what about something like the Asus VE276Q? (I have a tuner that I could give him.)
