Great article showing how vastly different latencies are over different I/O methods.

While this is truly an interesting perspective to the I/O latencies, it does give a very negative connotation to the slower devices who, given that an application isn't of critical nature, are good enough for most use cases, specially considering how advances in User interface design (UX in general) mask latency to just make it non-existant to us.

All of those I/O methods have their usefulness, but every programmer should understand just how vast the different the performance is between something like accessing data in cache vs. memory vs. hard drive, so they can make smart decisions about architecture. Hiding latency is an entire subject in itself, and an important one too. smile.gif

While interesting I think that there are some inaccuracies in your post. I don't think there are any timings in the CPU cache that should ever be measured in seconds. CPU cache should usually be measured in nano-seconds ... unless we are talking 8088, 8086 or 286 era, and then it would be milli-seconds.

Also if a mutex lock / or unlock took 25s our operating systems and multithreaded applications would be unbearable to use.
