Just look at Pook's E6300, 45c idle with only a mere 200mhz overclocked? that's why I never use nor recommend using the stock cooler, they're crap in every way. I'm sure with a Tuniq Tower 120, 3.0ghz is more feasible than with any other HSF.
i disagree with you. i was running at 3.2 with stock cooler a while back.

Here is the answer:

I've used the stock cooler and sucessfully got to 3.01GHz. Load temps (in TAT) were nearly 60C, which is the maximum you should want to go for.

I've since upgraded to an Artic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro, and now get MAX 54 (with Intel TAT load, Orthos is about 50, FAH about 45)

With the AC Freezer, I can rest easy knowing my CPU isn't remotely near danger levels... and it cost me 30 CDN. (Plus I got an extra 200MHz out of my OC).

One way or another you'll probably decided to upgrade you're cooling, so unless you're really strapped for cash, I highly recommend a basic after market cooler. The stock cooler requires many tweaks to get it working optimally (disable BIOS fan control, apply AS5 and remove stock paste, reseating a good couple of times to get the best temps possible, etc.)

HOWEVER, if you don't plan on running the PC 24/7 @ load, then maybe stock is all you need.

Thank you tons, this was one of the best and most informing responses. I appreciate it. I decided to somehow squeeze a typhoon in my budget. I hope it does well.

Temps?

Sure you can get it that high but I guess I'm used to the at or below 43c for highest temps in my CPUs using the Tuniq, I know there's no way in hell I'd be running my CPU overclocked with 50C+ at full load.

Someone can be successful at overclocking with the stock cooler but what good is it if the temps are going to be "that" high? if I ever see 50c+ I'd run for the hills but I don't think that'll ever happen since that my Tuniq Tower is the schiznit!
