Cannot create system image, External HDD reboots itself

Every time I try to create a system image on my Sony Vaio laptop my external hard drive (a WD My Passport 1TB) restarts itself after 2 minutes. What happens is that my external HDD makes the same notice as when the USB cable is taken out and replugged into the PC. Then the auto play thing shows up. Of course, this means that the system image fails.

What could be causing this? I already tried a clean Windows 7 install and the issue still occurs.

Could the problem be the external hard drive?

Either the USB controller on the Vaio is funky, or the USB controller on the Passport is funky.

Try writing some huge files to the external disk on another computer to try and replicate the problem.
