A little info if you please :P

Thread Starter
I am curious as to this whole scene. I hear about "folding" and "BOINCing" and the various teams involved. I have a 40mbps internet connection and a fairly decent machine (see sig.). I know it basically involves sharing my extra CPU/GPU usage. Can someone give a little more info to a noob like me? tongue.gif I wouldn't mind letting my computers abundant extra resources get put to a good use.

Any info is appreciated, preferably this will not be a cut and paste of the Wikipedia, as I have already read that and it really didnt make much of a difference as to my understanding.

Internet connection isn't a huge deal for BOINCing, but your connection is pretty fast either way haha. Also, you're computer is a heck of a lot more powerful than mine... lol. That 3770k and 680 Windforce can be put to good use in Boinc.

So with Boinc/F@H, you are allowing researchers to make use of the processing power of multiple personal computers of volunteers to do various computing tasks for things like Astrophysics, Mathematics, Biology, etc. It's like having a bunch of people going through college applications instead of one person in order to get the work done more efficiently and faster. It allows multiple hosts to take part in the research as many of the organizations are nonprofit and wouldn't be able to analyze/compute data on their own. A lot of the projects have some sort of goal they are trying to accomplish. For example, SETI@home is a project attempt to find signs of extraterrestrial intelligent life (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), while PrimeGrid@home is attempting to find the largest prime numbers. So in the Boinc client, you would run applications such as MilkyWay@home, Poem@home, GPUGRID@home, etc and complete Work Units, which would in turn give you credits. It's like having a job; You do the work and get "paid"

Dunno if that was a good explanation, but I tried haha.

You should use that 680 with MilkyWay@home. The GPU spreadsheet shows that it can finish a WU pretty quickly, nearly as fast as a 7950 or 7970. I do a lot of Poem@home, Donate@home, and PrimeGrid. Or at least I'm getting into them hah. When I get my 7950, I'll be doing other projects.
