Is water-cooling worth it? I'm new to water-cooling. - Page 3

I water cooled my AMD rig about a year ago and really like it. I water cooled my AMD FX-8120 originally because the stock heatsink/fan was so loud when the fan would ramp up plus at full load my FX seemed to be getting to hot. I went with a XSPC 750 RS240 kit when I started because it had everything I needed minus the coolant and for some that did not know anything about water cooling at all I did not want to make a mistake and not get something that I needed and then have to wait to get it up and running.Since then I have upgraded the water block to a XSPC Raystorm and changed my rad out for a RX360 in a push/pull. I have my FX-8120 oc'ed to 4ghz with just a 20x multiplier with no voltage overclock. CPU runs at 29c idle and has never gone over 35c full load compared to about 41c idle with the stock headsink/fan that is not to bad.

If you do go for water cooling it is addictive I am preparing to water cool my Sapphire 7950 next week.

Nah, not worth it at all.

Stock cooler is where it's at thumb.gif

/irony.

Not in all seriousness, if you're not watercooling, you don't deserve to have a high end computer biggrin.gif

I don't think it's "worth it performance/price" but it's worth it if you want to overclock, have fun with your hardware, look badass, quieter system...

Edit: For me, for instance, with a low-medium pc, I don't think it's worth it, as my CPU is 90€ nowadays and I wouldn't be able to squeeze double performance with a watercooling kit that would cost me more than that.

But I've tried a 3960X with a X79 UD5 and I can tell that, in order to get full performance of that beast you want WC. I could barelly hit 4,4GHz and I've seen some users get 4,8 with much lower temps here, in OCN, watercooling their LGA 2011 rigs.

Who buys 4 680s, after the second one your just wasting your money. The performance incerease in minimal to none. GJ wasting your money if your even telling the truth.
Honestly, I don't think it's worth it. I mean if you have the money go for it but it's really not worth it. Just get a nice air cooler that'll let you overclock a bit.

The only reason why I over locked my i7 was so I could safely get to 4.0GHz+. There really wasn't much of a noticibly performance increase going anywhere beyond 3.4GHz.

Save your money and get an SSD. That will definately be worth it.

Watercooling is pretty bad for price/performance but even if it's not worth it from that perspective it's definitely a nice thing for modders and people who like to tweak just for the sake of tweaking.

Quite honestly I don't think it's worth it for CPUs (GPUs and mobos maybe, depending on the situation). I didn't really get that big of an improvement when I had a CPU loop. I just went straight to phase for proper low temps.

With this generation (Kepler) i would have to say no it's not worth it, unless you really want a quiet system or like the aesthetics of it. Kepler runs rather cool, i had 4-Way SLI and the top cards highest reported temp i ever saw was 68c on air. Since over volting is out of the question, there isn't enough reason to warrant it at this stage.

For CPU i would say it's probably worth it if you want beyond 4.6Ghz, but with things like the Corsair H100 it does more than enough for most overclockers unless you care about breaking benchmarking records. Custom watercooling will always be around for the forseable future, but these contained loops from the likes of Intel and Corsair are making it less and less necessary these days. And those devices are getting better all the time....

It's really down to the individual, but that's my take on watercooling at the current time.
