Good 140mm PWM fans. - Page 2

bigger blades cutting larger chunks of air.. equals more wind noise for sure.
my artic f12 were good, not great, but good fans.. the new swiftechs seem
to be better in air quality and quanity, but the air noise level is quite higher.
i always kept looking to crank the F12 up.. but they were already maxed.. but
not enough air-flow. how do the F14 stack up? almost ordered 4 of those for
my midi case, instead went BGears.

Thats odd, the arctic cooling F12 seemed to review very well. I never really run my fans any louder than 1200rpm anyways. I've heard good things about the B-gears but I would never run them very fast and frozen cpu was out at the time anyways.

Also, doesn't the Swiftech Helix have sleeve bearing?

I have too a Cougar 140mm.
It's a quiet fan and I agree that it's not quiest than a 120mm fan.
The Viper 140mm is not a quiet fan, but shift more air than a Cougar 140mm.

The Swiftech Helix does indeed have a sleeve bearing (or is it rifle bearing?), but that does not automatically make it bad. All you need to do is gently peel back the sticker on the fan hub and place 1-2 drops of true synthetic motor oil (I only recommend Royal Purple or Redline, as they are Group IV and V respectively), probably 0W40, into the shaft, then seal the sticker back down. Your fan will be lubricated, likely quieter, and if you do this every 6mo or so, being careful not to "overload" it with oil, you can get many, many years out of the fan. I have ~5x 80mm and 2x 92mm Thermaltake sleeve-bearing fans from 2003 that still run perfectly to this day (and they were running 24/7 for at least 3 years, with close to 24/7 for another 2-3 years).

Just gotta take care of your parts, and they'll take care of you!


Also, another option is to get a Sunbeam RheoSmart6 PWM Fan Controller, which makes ALL fans connected to it PWM regardless of whether the fan itself is. $30 and all PWM fans sounds pretty good wink.gif

Does it actually produce a 12V powered modulation signal sent to the fan plug or just uses simple undervolting depending on PWM rate?

No, but it automatically means that it has the downsides of every other sleeve bearing fan. You know the more inconsistent quality, the fact that they wear out a bit faster when mounted horizontally, they don't seem to last as long in general. Personally, at a similar price I would choose a decent FDB bearing over a sleeve every time.

It reads teh temps from the mb pwm signals and controls the fans or just runs in classic mode.
