When you look at the IX from the side before reflow and the block mounted are the blocks sitting level ?

Honestly it's hard to tell because there is ram in the way, the idea is to have it level though. If you tighten too much it won't be level because the TIM will stop one side from going all the way down.

I'm going to pull the trigger on either an EK or Raystorm Copper within the next week. Any preliminary thoughts you might be able to share on either of those blocks?

Sorry I don't want to release preliminary information as it's unfair to the other manufacturer's whose blocks haven't been tested. I will say this though - the new chrome raystorm looks a lot better than the old copper one!

Are you sure you don't want a custom sniper though for your mod? I bet you could even persuade Erik to make it full copper if you want something to match the theme!

Chrome on a PC hardware?? How is that ROHS compliant?

EDIT (found this):
Q. Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) restrict the presence of Hexavalent Chromium to 1000 ppm per homogenous material. I have parts that are plated with hard chrome and was wondering if they are RoHS compliant. I've done a bit of research myself and found that the process includes a lot of CrIV but I can't conclude whether the hard chrome material contains any. So, does the actual hard chrome material contain Hexavalent Chromium and if so, is it above or below 1000ppm.

A. Although hard chrome is plated from a hexavalent chromium bath, in most instances, little or no hexavalent chromium remains with the part/deposit. Limited testing has shown that hexavalent chromium may be included in the deposit under certain conditions. I suspect that the porosity of chromium deposits (micro-structure) has something to do with it. Small pores could theoretically collect hexavalent solution and if these pores are subsequently enclosed by the deposit, then small amounts of hexavalent chromium could reside within the deposit. Since the porosity of the deposit is dependent of a number of variables (e.g., preplate procedures, current density, and bath chemistry), the amount of hexavalent chromium included will also vary widely from process to process and shop to shop. If you have a significant concern about RoHS compliance, perhaps the safest route to show due diligence is to have some representative test coupons analyzed. I believe this involves attempting to leach and test for hexavalent chromium from a metal plated sample with known surface area. As more data are made available world-wide, hopefully this concern can be eliminated.

Despite the technology could be executed properly and no cancerogenous leftovers are to be found on product, I don't trust chinese production at all.
They simply do not give rats ass about any legislation or health concerns mad.gif

I understand, and would probably do the same thing. Keep on doin' what you're doin'. Final results will be fun.

I love the look of the sniper's....but I'm committed to getting matching memory blocks and I don't think they make any.

Honestly I prefer ones that:
- have tool use as an option e.g. Apogee HD (screwdriver) or Sniper (12mm hex socket driver)
- bottom out the thumbscrews at the "right" point - this means you're less likely to get an uneven of off center TIM spread e.g. Apogee HD, EK Supremacy, EK Supreme HF
- have parts of the mount attached rather than floating on top of the block (e.g. particularly not the raystorms, or the Iceforce though that one is not as bad). The apogee HD take that to an extreme by having the screws retained to the block when you remove it. I like that, except it's a pain to change the screws for a different motherboard
- has large thumbscrews that are easy on the thumbs e.g. EK blocks and not the mips block

So from all of that it seems like I like the apogee the best on mounts so far. BUT I haven't finished all the blocks yet. I have to admit that I like testing on socket 2011 because you don't have to change the backplate thumb.gif

P.S I'll be on number 11 this evening.

My money is on the sniper for performance. Current owner of the 5Noz, Koolance, Raystorm and Arqtik cooling blocks.

Didn't know Erik could customize the top of the blocks. I'd have asked... rolleyes.gif
