Headphone Advice

Hey guys, I need some help in deciding which set of headphones I should buy. I originally was going to buy the Ultrasone Pro 550’s around Christmas time but sadly ended up not being able to get them then. So, in the meantime I tried to find somewhere I could try a pair with no luck. However, I was able to try the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80’s at a Guitar Center and loved them and thought they were a HUGE improvement in the music department over my Tritton AX 720. Given I only had 5 minutes with them to test, their comfort was also very good.
Another thing is, is that I can’t get the ATH A700’s out of my head since they are $90 cheaper.

So, basically I guess what I’m asking is whether or not the DT770’s warrant the $90 over the ATH A700’s or the $50 over the Ultrasones for my set of needs?

Budget – Absolute max is $190 (price of the DT770’s on Amazon) As low as possible for a noticeable difference over my Trittons but fits all of my needs.
~70% Gaming / 30% Music and Movies
Gaming - FPS and RPG’s mainly
Music Taste – A little bit of everything
Usage – Home only. Would need some sort of sound isolation though, so I can’t really hear others and other people can’t really hear what I’m listening to / playing.
Sound Card – I have an Asus Xonar DG.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to those three headphones from many threads and recommendations I've read over, but any other recommendations or advice would be very much welcomed and appreciated!

Please sway me as to which way I should go. And thanks in advance for any help!

I haven't bought them yet, only tried them at a Guitar Center. Also, maybe it's just me being picky, but I don't think I would want a used set. Either way though, you think that the DT 770's are the way to go for me? If so, which set would you suggest with my Xonar DG, the 80ohm or the 250ohm version?

Aren't these open? If so, wouldn't they not isolate very well?

The 80 ohm is more interesting to me. More boomy bass. Easy to drive.

Buy used (someone on OCN is selling for 105). Then buy replacement ear pads for like 10-15 dollars probably if you're that picky about gross ear gunk. Now you have fresh pads that are new and a fine working DT770 without paying premium price.

Yeah, that might be the better idea since I've already been able to use a pair and liked the way they sounded.

I don't know why I didn't even think about buying new ear pads and buying used, but I'm definitely going to look around for some now!
Also, thanks for the help biggrin.gif I hope to find a pair within the next week or two and will report my findings coming from a "gaming" headset to the 770's to possibly put more information and help anyone who was on the edge like myself.

If you've fallen in love with the sound of the DT770's get em lol, the only thing I'd recommend is maybe buy a pair from Guitar Center first to see how it pairs with ur current equipment. Plus you can test it across your movies, games and music, and also test for long term comfort at certain volume levels and ear fatigue. Then buy a used one, cuz I know Guitar Center will give you a FULL refund before 14 days, I know cuz I tested a few phones from them before I went for the Pro550s lol. I never tried the DT770's tho cuz they were out of my price range : /

Sorry for the late reply, I went on vacation.
I wouldn't exactly say that I fell in love with the sound, more so the fact that they're the best sounding headphones I've been able to listen to haha. When I went into Guitar Center to try them, the guy said that I couldn't return them, because I asked if I could buy the Pro 550's since they didn't have a pair in-store for me to listen to, then return them if I didn't like them, or just try them in-store whenever they came in. Maybe he just didn't know what he was talking about.

I do think I found a nice looking pair for a good price though, so one last question before I go for it. After re-reading the "Most Recommended Audio Products" thread the 770's are recommended for someone who wants bassier sound rather than say the compromising gamer. I know they sacrifice some soundstage being closed and having more bass and I'm fine with that, but are they still going to be good for gaming rather than just bassier music? I just want to make sure whenever I get these I don't get surprised by getting them and having them severely lacking or being disappointed in the gaming department. Thanks again for any help!
