Best CPU for After effects video processing & Sculpting Zbrush

So my friend is planning to put together a new PC. It is mainly for Rendering and video effects, but will play games as well. So what is the best CPU\GPU combination to get?
It really comes down to how much money you got. For rendering and video effects more is really better but as you also want to play games workstation parts are off the table. If money is no object then you could look at a Intel Core i7-3930K (but its very poor bang for buck) and a GTX 680 or two for gaming. Regardless of how much you can spend on a CPU and graphics card you should get lots of ram. 16GB at least, perhaps even more if you got the money and you get an OS/mobo that can handle more.

For a more budget oriented approach you could step down from the LGA2011 socket to a LGA 1155 and a i7-3770K as it's much better value then the i7-3930K. If you need to pinch even more pennies you could even drop down to a i5-3570K or 2500k which are great budget performers.

Similary if even a single GTX 680 is to expensive then just drop down to a GTX 670. Its still a great GPU.

Also consider getting a SSD to seed up some of the Rendering and video effect tasks. But like I said earlier don't skimp on the ram you will need it.

Edit: It should go without saying that a proper OC will help speed up rendering and video editing.

It is most likely going to be a 3770K, but is it great for OC ?and why not a 2600k ?

Also, 7970 is remarkably cheaper than a 680, where I live. So I'm most likely going with a 7970
post #5 of 12
Well the 2600k/2700k are great CPU's and if you can get them cheaper then the 3770K sure why not. But if they are the same price the 3770K is the better option as it is clock for clock faster then the sandy bridge and OC's about as well to.

Edit: I'm not sure if this applies to current radeons but the drivers for my 4890 have not been that great in 3D programs (Though Blender has had no issues). Some features don't work properly in Maya for example. From what I have read nvidia cards have a better track record in thees types of applications. So depending on what software you are using you might want to check how well the 7970 works in that instance.

2600k 270
3770k 290
Not that big of a difference IMO. So 3770k it is.

Z68 or Z77?

From what I've read, the 7970 seems to out perform the 680 at computing power, better in Zbrush and Maya so far.

I'm not that up to speed o the chip sets but as I recall it the main difference between the Z68 and Z77 is PCI-E 3.0. That and some other minor enhancements. PCI-E 3.0 doesn't give much of a benefit now but might be nice to have in the future so if the Z77 board is not super expensive it might be nice to go with the latest tech.

Well it's nice to hear AMD has stepped up the driver support thumb.gif To bad thous improvments don't extend back to my old cards.

What about SSD's? I have a good offer on the 120GB Corsair Force series 3, is it any good?
SSD are a bit out side of my knowledge as I have not had time to read up on them that much. It is a Corsair so it should be pretty good but don't know how well it stacks up again's other in terms of speed and price. The reliability should be right up there though. If you really want to get into details how well trim works and how it retains speed over time then you need to find someone more knowledgeable then me redface.gif
