New AMD build

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, first time poster here!

I am looking for some advice on my next build. My current pc is starting to lag behind in the modern games and it's time for an upgrade. I have a few questions about it, and I figured this was the place to ask!

Current PC:
PSU: OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI 700W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80570E8400

GPU: EVGA 512-P3-N841-AR GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5

Mobo: ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

What I am thinking about building, is of course, one of the most controversial things possible, the scorpius platform that features a FX 8120. I know there's been a firestorm of hate over it, and I may be clueless over the intricacies and all the comparisons that have been made. I still like it, and it'll take a LOT of convincing to otherwise sway me. Though, I may wait for Piledriver.

PSU: ( Same if possible )

CPU: Newegg.com - AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBOX + Newegg.com - CORSAIR H70 Core High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

GPU: Newegg.com - ASUS HD7850-DC2-2GD5 Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

RAM: Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

Mobo: Newegg.com - ASUS Crosshair V Formula AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard with 3-Way SLI/CrossFireX Support and UEFI BIOS

I do not plan to overclock to crazy levels, I have never even overclocked my e8400, and might not even overclock the 8120. All I care to do is play the latest games at decent settings ( mainly BF3 ), and for the overall build to be better than what I have now. I think, that for the money, and the chance of windows 8 to really give proper dues to the FX8120, it might be worthwhile to get it. Anyone have an opinion? Specifically people that actually own the 8120/8150?

Yeah you can use same psu. Also I would suggest waiting for Piledriver when it comes out in 3 months. Everything else looks good though.
If you want to stick with AMD wait for Piledriver Vishera based FX cpus. If you want to set it up now go for core i5 3570k. It will easily be better for gaming purposes.

You can of course wait for Piledriver to be released , at least then you will have more options when it comes to choosing a cpu.

As a Bulldozer owner ( see sig for full spec ) i have over 30 game titles and use CS5.5 , Vegas ,Cinema 4D and i have to say i love it. I play BF3 mostly at a mix of high/ultra settings without any issue 45-65fps 1920x1080, other games max out without issue. Even general performance the FX8120 i use is great and i upgraded from an OC'd Q9450. As to overclocking, i tried overclocking it and it handles it with ease but i leave it stock for day2day stuff as there is enough power in it to do what i need. Temps wise i use a H60 and temps rarely exceed 45c for me, that is despite the fact these cpu's run hot.

Id say go for it, if you want to wait for piledriver then thats good too, but despite the "faildozer" reviews and hate threads the FX8120 is a good cpu and you wont be disappointed. Just my 2 cents biggrin.gif

I dont own an AMD platform and never have owned one. But even I am seriously attracted to the AMD 8 core processor.
I dont know why and even after the negative remarks that this processor got from various bench-marking and other tech sites I still find those 8 cores to be a great point to give it a try. Even though maybe i7 or i5 are better that FX 8120 but they are priced way higher the any AMD processor and moreover they just have 4 cores. I agree that games today have just started using 4 cores but I dont think it would be long that games are optimized for 4 or more cores. So if you look at the topic from this angle AMD's 8 core series seems pretty good choice to me.
And frankly I feel the processor in the gaming rig IS NOT OF PRIME IMPORTANCE. I mean sure it matter to have a good processor but I feel it is the GPU that handles much of the work load in games (Except those RTS games). The processor should just be good enough not to bottleneck your choice of GPU. Correct me if I am wrong over this.
And well the FX 8120 or FX 8150 certainly does not bottleneck and graphic card out there as of today.

What I would suggest you like others is wait for the pile drivers to arrive in 2013 maybe and then you can make the better choice.
Even I am looking for an upgrade of my rig and I must say my choice is more inclined towards AMD's Pile Driver series.
Currently using Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHZ.

Tbh..I recommended a lot of people wait for BD last year..and it was a bad disappointment..I'm not making that mistake this year. For motherboards..Sabertooth or CH5..
For CPU:I'd recommend a Thuban..(Phenom II x6)but they are hard to find...and going for premium prices.I might would just stick an Athlon II X 3 in the mobo and wait for Piledriver..Or do a Sandy Bridge build.

I would wait for Piledriver. If you are not going to overclock your cpu much or even at all, BD will be disappointing while gaming especially in bf3. Its not bad at stock speeds but its not good. I find bf3 to run a hell of a lot better with mine OC'd. I currently have the 6100 but I had the 8150 and i would say the same thing about it as well.

Piledriver at stock speeds should be enough to play bf3 great or even with a slight over clock. Otherwise I would go with an i5 3570k as already mentioned.

Wait for PD. Its right around the corner.

Also, you mentioned that you might not overclock the 8120 if you go in for it. BDs need to be overclocked to get acceptable gaming performance tongue.gif

"BDs need to be overclocked to get acceptable gaming performance" ? Really ? Mines at stock and performance is more than fine for all games i run including BF3.

If you said for rendering in CS5 or other programs then yes OC'ing definitely improves performance and reduces rendering times, but games ,no.

The only exception is maybe to the low end BDs biggrin.gif
