alright, it shouldn't be too bad for a board that supports RAID, but even if it doesn't, if it supports AHCI then that is all you need.

Um it wouldn't install on drives smaller than 160GB, applies to both SSD and HDD.

For streaming to the iPad check out Plex.

http://plexapp.com

I'm also running WHS 2011 and one of the problems I have with Plex is that I have to manually start it whenever the server restarts. All I do to start it though is log on and then lock the server so it stays running in the background, not too big of a deal because the server rarely needs a restart. Plex uses a lot of cpu power when encoding so that is something to keep in mind as well. On my server running an Athlon II X2 270 cpu usage is usually above 90% when encoding a 720p movie to my phone.

I use Subsonic for media streaming. Awesome server

Sorry to revive this thread, but another issue that I was thinking about was the i3 power.

I was initially planning on using it for home storage and streaming, but now with a 100Mbps up and downlink with static IP in Singapore, I am planning for more.

- Minecraft Server -> 50 Person capacity
- 2 websites
- VPN Server
- TF2 Server
- CS:GO Server

I'm planning to ditch WHS2011 and go with the Windows Server 2012 edition which is due to come out 2 weeks later.

I would have an increased budget and this would span over a long period of time.

Well to do this with Server 2012, you are definitely going to want to run Hyper-V. You budget of $400 is probably going to be overpassed as well. To run all of that, I would say that you will need at least 16GB of RAM (32 would be better), and a single 6-8 core CPU, or dual proc's just for fun (but you are talking a $1000 server with dual proc's).

I have an increased budget to 1500 USD. So it should be alright.

I was thinking about an E3-1230V2, wouldn't that fulfil what I want to do?

I run the E3-1220v2 in my storage server, and it's a great CPU. I just now realized why everyone goes for the 1230v2 over the 1220v2, and that's because the 1230v2 has HT (8 threads). Interesting.

It would probably work, but I would personally want more power than that...then again I am not really an Intel guy (only reason I have the 1220v2 in my storage server is that I found a $200 LGA1155 board with 4 onboard Intel gigabit NICs, otherwise it would have been an AMD build).

Would an AMD CPU be better in this situation or Intel? And I was planning on having a 250GB HD as boot drive, RAID 0 SSD for the game servers and RAID 5 storage for all the movies and stuff that I'd like to store.

Gigabit NICs are pretty cheap here in China, 24 bucks a card? 4 ports per card.
