Primary hard drive failing on WHS.. How should I proceed?

Thread Starter
So it sounds like my primary HDD is failing in V1 WHS. I only have the OS on there. I believe that I made a backup of the server OS a few months ago. I guess my question is, if the repair diagnostics fails to help the primary HDD, how/can I get my server up and running as quickly as possible? All of my data are on various other HDDs in my server. Just need some guidance.. And help is appreciated. If I decided to just get rid of my mobo (since the current one can only do 32 bit) and go to WHS V2, will I be able to plug in my HDDs with the data on them and have access to that data or will I need to find another ~10 TB of storage to server as an intermittent host for the data? Does all this make sense? I'm just freaking out right now.. redface.gif

The fastest way would be to take the image you have already made and restore from that image. When I restore from an image to my SSD, it only takes about an hour. So depending on how big your drive is and the image size, it could take serveral hours to setup, but afterward you don't have to worry about configuring everything again as it was already done. Just gotta replace what applicatons and whatnot you had on it.

As for the data on the drives, I have gone from a GA-EP45-UD3P to my Sabertooth with Intel RAID and kept all my data along with my raid configuraton. All I had to do was go into bios and just turn RAID back on.

Now I don't know if that would be the same for your server. What I would do would be to keep your old motherboard until you have got all your data back up and going again. If not you can always put the old motherboard back in and back off your data, then move the data back on in a new configuration (I find this the best practice as it ensures no data loss).

+1 to cloning

clonezilla is a great freeware program to use for this. I'd purchase a drive the same as your main (or bigger if you want to upgrade) and clone it over. thumb.gif

and I +1 to clonezilla. Used to use Acronis and Ghost, but when the drive is "failing" clonezilla does the trick more often than not. the recovery option can make the clone process take a long time, but it almost always works. best thing to do after a full clone though on a windows drive is to run a full chkdsk. do this all the time for hdd's that are "mostly" dead before getting the replacements.

Thanks everyone for the replies! (Even though I haven't responded sooner..)

After my Windows Home Server Application on my main pc started complaining, I ran a disk repair tool found in that application. It seemed to work, since now my drive is considered "healthy" again. But I am worried.. It's an older hard drive (I decided to put the OS on the smallest hdd and put data on all of my other ones) so I wouldn't mind replacing it now.. Is clonezilla something simple/best to use that I can do on WHS to move the OS from one HDD to another? Is that the best option? Although I do have some backups, I REALLY don't want to have to transfer around 10TB of data back to my data drives..

with clonezilla, it'd be just like it was the same drive booting up as normal. Just clone the boot drive to a new/replacement drive swap out the old/possibly dying drive and you should boot back up just like usual. shouldn't have to touch the data drives. Personally I like to clone drives in a pc with no other drives connected, so you don't accidentally clone to/from the wrong drive. You can always just unplug the power from all the data drives during the cloning process, then once you have the new drive cloned and in place plug everything back in.

DO NOT just clone the WHS OS Drive. Each disk is identified by the Disk ID number (unique to each HDD) and a simple clone will not work. Trust me, I found out the hard way.
Clonezilla will copy the Disk ID number, but if your using a different size of brand of HDD, ther are other items than need to be changed (starting offset, model)..

There is a workaround HERE. I tried it and screwed everything up even more. HERE is another using clonezilla
You could do a OS recovery to a new hdd though and it should work.

I ended up just going to WHS 2011 and upgrading my hardware. I had all my data on a 2 tb drive and a 640 gig drive.
I put everything on 1 2 tb drive and installed WHS 2011 on the 640 gig and set my 2nd 2tb drive as the storage drive. I just copied everything from the original 2tb drive to the "new" drive. It was a pain, and with 10 TB would be even more of a pain.
