You naysayers are quite welcome to not use programs to free up memory. SOmebody who is actually short of RAM might want to try them though.

The comments about these programs not knowing what programs are unnecessary are of course completely ridiculous. In the case of Gamebooster it shuts down all of the update services and that sort of garbage that is not only using a bit of RAM, they are also hogging internet bandwidth. These days the internet bandwidth whores are the only reason I use Gamebooster, and I can assure you that it works great for this.

If you're short on RAM, buy more RAM. 99% of cases I bet I can prove that a system is not actually under memory contention and that the memory manager is doing a fine job. You show me a program that actually knows real-time without any sort of database which programs are unnecessary, sir. Besides the OP really isn't short on RAM, lol.

Internet bandwidth would be easier to manage than memory so I have no doubt it works for those thumb.gif

And yeah well update services are garbage so I'll give you that one! I'm forever turning those bastards off...

I have 16 GBs . This thread is from somebody who doesn't have that much. I suggested some proven free ways to boost your available RAM. You then jump in and say "Blargh!, BUY MOAR RAMZ!" . FINE. If you think the answer to every computer problem is to throw money at it send the OP $100 so he can get 16 GB of RAM .If you are not ready to write that check then what you are posting is complete garbage.

We naysayers are programmers and computer engineers.... You know people who actually understand how computers work.

Anyone who has a relatively decent amount of RAM and is still short should first understand where there memory is being utilized. If OP has 8GB+ in active use, then he obviously is intentionally running something that uses that much RAM. Most consumer daily-usage software really do not use that much active memory.

Have you actually done any analysis of what Gamebooster actually does? Games do not need that much bandwidth in the age of 5Mbps+. What applications are actually " internet bandwidth whores"? If you have applications chewing up your bandwidth without you realizing it, address the problem directly.

I am not attacking you. I am explaining how programs work and flaws in your assumptions of things work.

You might want to begin educating yourself by understanding how memory is managed. Mark Russinovich wrote a very good series on it:

All my eggs are in this basket right now.
VMMap and RAMMap from Sysinternals can help with this. It will also tell you whether you really are under memory pressure.

It is not impossible, it is hard to get right. If you've got a known database of programs that are unnecessary like them updaters, then that's fine, but if these programs try and do anything real-time, its a load of junk.

How about you define "unnecessary "? If it is running, then someone or something deemed it necessary enough to execute. These memory freeing programs may have a pre-compiled and vetted list of whitelist/blacklist programs that the developer deems "unnecessary". However, they cannot determine in real-time or unidentified programs.

Want to run a test? Create a program that loops creating files in memory to a predetermined amount so it eats up memory. Then have these 3rd party programs run and see if they kill your program.

Besides, is it actually running and using active pages.... or is it just sitting in memory and is safe to place in swap?

First bit, I think there are definitely a lot of unnecessary processes. Things like speed launchers, always resident program updaters... Probably what he means.
Bolded bit... well guess what programs have no clue about this... tongue.gif In any case if it is safe to page out, it'll get paged out... so that ties in with the first bit in that if it CANT be paged out then it is necessary. All these programs do is FORCE memory to be paged out, which just gets paged back in straight away anyway.

After lunch effect anyone?

Bolded bit... well guess what programs have no clue about this... tongue.gif In any case if it is safe to page out, it'll get paged out... so that ties in with the first bit in that if it CANT be paged out then it is necessary. All these programs do is FORCE memory to be paged out, which just gets paged back in straight away anyway.

Oh, I agree that there are "unnecessary processes" to me.... but my point is that it is subjective and someone has to make a determination.
