Core i7 920 or FX8120? - Page 6

does the 875k model the one with HT?

Couldnt find the specific cpu in a quick fleabay search but this might be of interest to the OP

http://www.ebay.com/itm/i7-875K-Heatsink-P55A-UD3-HD6950-2GB-4GB-OCZ-Platinum-DDR3-2000-500w-power-/190697570212?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item2c6675ffa4

decent computer for the price and since there isnt any case that means you have choice of what to put it in, which is usually the biggest issue of buying a prebuilt

No, look at benchmarks, the single threaded performance of bulldozer is terrible. It will definitely be a noticeable difference for anyone trying to do a CPU intensive task that does not utilize 8 cores

of course I would chose the 920 over the 8150 if u didnt take all the intangibles into account. The x58 isn't exactly dead but the AM3+ platform has more room to grow. The 990 chipset isn't going to be updated but the southbridge probably will be.
I would get a Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge like everyone said via combo at Microcenter if you have one nearby
if not I would either score a i7 870 and a 1156 setup for cheap off ebay. the 870 is basically the 920.

^I agree. Buying a new 1366 makes no sense at this moment in time as the 1336 socket is dead. I love my 920 and it does still perform amazingly well all things considering. If you compare it to a FX-8120/FX-8150 with MAX OC's then it does out perform AMD chips by a margin. Both the 920 and the FX are huge power hogs compared to a Sandy or Ivey.

Considering that the 1366 is dead socket I would recommend going with the FX-8120 even tough is is slower then the 920.

The question is why are you considering thees two in the first place as the 1155 socket with Ivy and sandy is far better then both and have better price performance?

If that's your reasoning, get a Phenom II; it competes pretty well with the FX series, and is much cheaper, as well as being on the same socket.

I don't really get this dead socket stuff, 1155 is going to be replaced next gen, and I have no idea what is going on at AMD, but socket AM3 is probably going to be replaced as well after pile driver.

Definitely the 8120. Piledriver will be just plug and go for a 990FX chipset.

A core i7 920 @ 4.2GHZ would be faster then a FX-8120 @ 4.6....
If a CPU drew 400W your motherboard would probably explode.

It's not just about the fact that there is not upgrade chip for the 1366 line (well there is but the 950's and faster are stupidly expensive and not that much faster). The FX chips and nehalems are pretty similar in terms of performance. The price can vary but in most cases the 1366 are still more expensive the the AMD alternative. If you get a AM3+ board you will at least have the option to drop in a piledriver later. As for the 1155. I don't know what Intels plans for it are but even now it has a better upgrade path then a 1366 as you can get a 2500k now and drop in a Ivybridge 3770k later.

As for older AMD chips. Sure a x6 thuban (namely the 1100T) is a great chip even today and as long as you have a AM3+ board it can be upgraded later. From what I have seen though its getting pretty hard to find 1100T as they are so good but are no longer made.

Intel's moving to the socket 1150 with Haswell.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haswell_(microarchitecture)

One problem with the upgrade path argument is that you can't just upgrade the processor a lot of the time, if you use a second gen chipset with ivy bridge, you lose a massive number of features, and the manufacturer had to being out an updated BIOS for ivy bridge.

I can't believe AMD got rid of the Thubans, they were so awesome budget processors.

it's not fun beating on a dead horse anymore. bulldozer sucks and everyone knows it. the i7 920 would still be a much better processor compared to the FX8120. better IMC, monster overclockers (untouchable by amd at 4ghz and above) great in gaming(bulldozer is crap in gaming) and decent in multithreaded applications. stop with the intel fanboy stuff. I've been an amd enthusiast for the longest time. bulldozer sucks that's why i jumped ship. I've owned almost every amd chip out there. If you want the better chip get the i7 920.

Because I already own a Bulldozer setup and have the gear to make a Nehalem setup work if I buy a motherboard. In the end, the bulldozer setup is already complete, whereas the Nehalem setup isn't. Seeing as they both trade blows and the Bulldozer setup has a more modern motherboard with a better upgrade path, that's what I'm going with.

I'm absolutely sure I'll be fine with this rig. I've been using a Llano laptop and besides gaming, its been fantastic. Thanks for all the posts in the thread, but I'm going FX8120, not i7 920.
