Do you see interest in overclocking fading?

Just because Sandy and Ivy are great, that doesn't make Nehalem any better than it was at release.

It's pretty much dead. It's reverted to it's taboo state and, for the most part, is no longer free.

Thanks Intel.

Thread Starter
I live in Brazil. Do you guys have any idea how hard it is to sell a 920 here? Why would anyone buy it if they can get the 2500k? Besides, I can't spend much more money on this build. The Bulldozer setup is going to be cheaper, perform just as well and I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

It doesn't make a difference to me if it's slightly slower than the 920 in some applications if I can get it for cheaper. I'm not sure why this thread is still going, I've made my call.

such ignorance , the 8core amd runs at 4ghz with it clock boost , while an i7 920 runs at 2.99 max with turbo boost , ofc there is a difference in the benchmarks , it runs hotter and is slightly better in performance , you are talking about 8 cores vs 4 here , see the efficiency ur self now , i run a 920 @ 3.5ghz with a 30$ cooler and runs great

the i7 920 is outdated, the fx is just as behind and inefficient..y not get a 3570k? seems to be equals to the 8150 and definitely better than 920 and 8150 at gaming

cores does not equate to more performance when comparing different architectures
formula to performance= ipc*clock*cores
bd has crap ipc bro... there is a reason why cortex a15 dual is just as fast as a9 quad at the same clocks, i wonder why tongue.gif

on well threaded games and on multithreaded works it would be good though but tbh I'd rather get a balanced ship that is flexible and is good with everything unlike bulldozer which is good with one job but sucks with another

I agree with every word Statius and others said through out the thread, get the 920.
Take a look here (Dont know if someone already posted this or not) http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970_CPU_Scaling/
Quote:
It looks like the clear winner of our little skirmish is Intel's "Sandy Bridge" Core i5-2500K. The processor has a significant performance advantage over our other contenders thanks to the combination between an efficient microarchitecture, high clock speed and Turbo Boost. At our lowest resolution of 1024x768 we see about 20% improved framerates when compared to the i7-920 and the AMD FX-8150. However, as resolution increases, and our tests become more GPU limited than CPU limited, the performance lead shrinks to below 10%, which is still noteworthy.

When looking at AMD's Bulldozer at low resolutions, which is where each CPU can prove its worth, we see the FX-8150 showing more weakness than strength, despite its eight CPU cores. That does not mean that Bulldozer is hopeless for gaming. Once resolution and AA is cranked up, even the fast HD 7970 GPU becomes the limiting factor in most games and we see very decent performance. Unfortunately platform cost of the Bulldozer setup is similar or higher when compared to the Intel 2500K which does offer better performance overall. In its current state Bulldozer is a very tough sale to any member of the gaming crowd. I could imagine it being interesting for users who want to use other benefits of the platform, like multi GPU gaming with two graphics cards connected via PCI-Express x16 each - Sandy Bridge LGA 1155 supports only 2x x8. Another incentive for Bulldozer could be the native six SATA 6 Gbps ports with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 support, which would make a hell of a server. Nevertheless, the average gamer is better off with Intel's LGA 1155 Sandy Bridge platform.

Our aging Core i7-920 is still doing respectably well. So if you still have a first-generation Core i7, there's no need for you to upgrade.

Bulldozer should have been the awnser to x58 not to p67.
Even p67 is better than Bulldozer on pretty much all the tiers (Let alone i3's which are not made for the same usage as a i5-i7)

If it's cheaper then okay, go for the bulldozer, juste don't plan on crossfiring that 6950 because you'll regret fast enough.
Having a friend kicking a 920 for 4 years now and he doesn't want to upgrade because there is no need to (He could get may be 10 FPS changes with a brand new $600-$800 CPU/MB/RAM combo ...)
