Amd processors vs Intel processors, which are really better and if Intel is better how much... - Page 2

I currently own both a 2600k with a 6970ati and a 965 amd with a 5830ati . I much prefer to surf the net and play most games on the amd rig with the exceptions being the battlefield games BFBC2 and BF3. They are the only ones that show a big enough difference in minimum frame rate to effect game play. I mean , they both have enough power to push fps in most games to the point it doesn't really matter, e.g. its hard for me to notice a difference between 900 fps and 450 fps in CSS .
I feel a slight hesitation in the way my mouse reacts on the intel rig..... can't explain it, but it really screws me up on some fps games ( i have alienware tact X mice on both). It's the main reason I spend 90% of my time on the amd rig.

For gaming, unless you are considering a new system with a multi-gpu setup, then I think you are fine with what you have smile.gif

For other uses, well its just up to you if you want to shave a minute or two off the time it takes to encode a video etc. Intel has an advantage in things like that.

Good luck with your decision

I couldn't tell a difference between my 8120 and my old 2500k in day to day computing, and/or gaming. The 8120 def had an edge though in HD Video Rendering, and is a lot more fun to O.C. A 2500k/3570K rig will usually cost about $90 more than an 8120 with comparably featured mobos. Thats money better spend on something like an SSD, or better GPU IMO. There is no question however as to who holds the crown in flagship performance.

Intel processors generally use less power than AMD processors have been mostly recommended for price/performance

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html

But if you don't mind waiting a bit longer AMD is releasing their Piledriver CPUs later

Your 965BE won't keep up with the recent Intel offerings (Sandy and Ivy Bridge CPUs), but it's competitive with everything else. As others have said, if your main interest in gaming, you'll do a lot better to invest in a better video card than you will buying a faster CPU. There are people on OCN still happily running five-year-old overclocked Intel Core 2 Quad processors with modern video cards and getting good results.

At the current time, Intel has the better CPU offerings, although you can put together a very strong AMD system at a very good price if you pick the right parts. The Phenom II's are generally better gaming CPUs, while the FX processors can make for a killer rendering or encoding machine because of all of the cores, and they're strong for gaming if you overclock them. The next-generation of FX processors, called Piledriver, is coming out around October and should out-perform Phenom II clock-for-clock while running at much higher clockspeeds.

AMD has one part of the market where it is superior. If you're looking to build a budget system or to buy a relatively inexpensive laptop that will allow gaming at decent framerates, their APU's, which combine either an Athlon II core or (now) a Piledriver core along with an AMD GPU, are much better than the Intel i3's that come with an on-board GPU. Many laptop-makers using Intel add in a dedicated Nvidia GPU to make up for the anemic Intel graphics core.

comparing by brand will result to nothing.

you should compare between generations,
this was my experience since pentium II, before that i used IBM.

Pentium II > AMD K6
Pentium III < Athlon
Pentium III < Athlon XP
Pentium IV < Athlon 64
Pentium IV Prescott > Athlon 64
Pentium D < Athlon 64 X2
Core2 = Athlon 64 X2
Core2Quad > Phenom I
Core2Quad = Phenom II
i7 > Phenom II
i7 > AMD FX

I remember our pentium IIs would kick the crap out of our friends using the k6 when we played quake 3.
then the first generation of athlon came and the speed difference was huge.

First gen athlon is like the sandy bridge of today, while pentium III was like phenom II
