Remember these 'too dodgy to be true' shots of what was purported to be a next-gen Microsoft console devkit? According to sources we've spoken to working on Durango projects, the shots actually check out - this is alpha hardware given to developers currently working on next-gen titles.

Beyond that, further information is sketchy and unreliable. DaE reckons that the current devkits were dispatched to studios in February, and feature Intel CPUs and a graphics card that carries the NVIDIA brand - but he doesn't identify either part more specifically. He also claims that the Durango kit features more than 8GB of memory (other sources have suggested 12GB), and that it is 64-bit in nature - at this point it's worth bearing in mind that dev hardware typically features double the RAM of retail kit in order to accommodate debugging tools and other systems. DaE also says that Microsoft is targeting an eight-core CPU for the final retail hardware - if true, this must surely be based around Atom architecture to fit inside the thermal envelope.

Eurogamer

Can't really get further from this when it comes to confirmed news articles but rumors are rumors. I found the article interesting.

An Atom octocore?

...adding that current DirectX 11 engines developed on PC can be ported to 64-bit and that they will run with no problem on Microsoft's new console.

Neat.

Unfortunately with this still being a rumour I can't wet myself with excitement, but as long as the available boost in performance is there then we might be able to see some improvements on the PC side of things as well.

I look forward to see what happens.

When I saw this I thought it was a revamp of the XNA framework for indie devs frown.gif How do you qualify as a 'real' developer to get these kinds of things and actually be able to sell discs? What separates the guy who made Fez vs whoever made the lease selling xbox title.

Money, a lot of it. And usually a contract that you'll develop your first game on it within a certain period of time so it will be ready near the launch of the console.

It's real. I can't say exactly what the spec is but the dev kit I've seen has 8GB of RAM, so it would be a safe bet that the retail kit will have 4GB.

[IGN] Xbox 720 development kit photos surface

Quote:

Now, however, Digital Foundry has spoken to “multiple developers working on next-gen projects” as well as DaE himself and confirmed that the images are indeed a legitimate look at the hardware being used to develop games for Microsoft’s next-generation system.

[...]

DaE reports that the most recent round of development kits were sent out in February, with Intel CPUs and an NVIDA graphics card. He says the kit sports 8GB of RAM (though other sources say 12GB) and has a 64-bit operating system.
