2 stock GTX 680's in SLI are faster then a 690.

2 GTX 680 Lightnings in SLI are quite a bit faster than a GTX 690.

Every extra bit counts counts with DX11, Ultra, SSAO turned on at 2560x1440 and above.

Lol. A single GTX 680 is better than a HD 6990.

I've had both and the HD 6990 is an insult to AMD. Thing was total rubbish. GTX 690 is far from perfect but it's a beautiful piece of technology inside and out.

If you think the 6990 was rubbish, did you see the 590?

HD 6990 had a lot more power and along with it the heat and noise but also had more microstutter than the GTX 590. Don't get me wrong, they were both pretty bad designed cards but the HD 6990 was worse.

I guess the noise and microstutter are good points, but according to this the 590 consumes ~ 50 watts more under average and peak (3D mark), while maximum has the 6990 at 4 watts more (Furmark). 6990 also overclocks better. I guess 590 was better for air (quieter), while the 6990 was better for watercooling (overclocking, not voltage locked and non-exploding parts) and multi monitors (5 monitors supported)?

I see people cussing the performance of the potential 7990. It is not out yet because it sucks in comparison to GTX690 etc etc

Reality is, AMD made a complete mess up with drivers generation, especially xfire drivers. After 9 months, I still see current drivers as beta drivers.

They could not possibly release the 7990 until they get all the bugs out, which they still have not.

12.8 for me so far seem ok, but for others they are bad. 12.6 & 12.7 did not work for me properly at all. Last ones that worked well for me were out in April.

So forget heat/powerdraw/microstutter/performance of 690 worries, before they can even look at these they need to get some solid drivers to even think about releasing the card, which they STILL do not have.

I'm surprised how the same cards with the same drivers can behave so differently.

Btw, since 7990 is 2x 7970 3gb will I be able to Crossfire that card with my 7970? If that's the case, it might worth the extra price considering performance and space.

Typically speaking (referring to previous generations), will the 7990 outperform 2 7970's?
