Overclocking Question

Thread Starter
I have a Phenom II 1090t 6 core cpu with a GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard. The reason why I want to overclock is because of poor performance in some of the games I play The question I have is how much can I overclock or can I overclock at all? I have stock fans and didn't know if I have any room for overclocking. Also I have a 750W psu running a gtx 580 graphics card. I have a medium tower with 2 fans in the front and two in the back.

Howdy
I have not had a chance to play with that board, but reviews are good.
OE/stock cooling will be your limiting factor.
Read up on these CPU's,most have good luck with simply increasing the multiplier.
Baby steps...please fill out your SIG for add'l help...

good chip (maybe) good board..If you have a pretty good one..4.3-4.4 stable..I'd disable 2 cores for gaming.
Here's a good guide:http://www.overclock.net/t/777378/official-gappos-little-deneb-thuban-overclocking-guide-with-too-many-smileys/0_20 Do everything in order biggrin.gif
Keep the cores under 55c for stability.
If you can get 4.4..everything is butter-smooth. :yessir.gif:

I tried overclocking on my stock fans and so far everything seems OK.I got it up to 3.5 without changing the voltage. One thing I'm concerned about is the heat. My CPU was already at 60C without overclocking and with the overclock it seemed to get up to around 64C. Is this too much heat? I have noticed some performance increase but I would like to try increasing it more. Can I increase it any more without upgrading the cooling system?I'm not sure about being able to get it up to 4.4 but Is there a CPU fan I could get to achieve 4 or do I need liquid cooling for that?

I've been running the 3.5 overclock for a few days and last night my computer crashed. Does this mean I should take a step down? For now I went back to stock speeds and it's been running fine. Did it overheat or did I not have enough voltage. When I checked my temps they were always at around 64C with the overclock. Is this too hot?

eather take it down or adjust your voltage
post #7 of 58
It is pretty hot, the Phenom II series shouldn't load over 58C, from what I've been reading here.

For peace of mind, you want to stay at or below 55°C under load. My 1090T use to do 3.8 Ghz @ 1.425V (1.47V) under load. There is much performance to be gained by overclocking the North Bridge as well at Hyper Transport. I would aim for a 2800Mhz NB and HT freq. along with a 3.8+ O.C. on the CPU for a substantial increase in performance.

Look into upgrading your cooling;

I'll check into getting a better fan but I was getting pretty high temps even on stock settings. Could this be the result of a medium size tower?
I'm using your stock cooler on my Athlon II x2 250:p
