2x4GB sticks vs 4x2GB sticks

I'm thinking of upgrading my machine, and I was wondering if there was any sort of disadvantage to having 4 sticks vs 2 sticks of RAM.

having 4 sticks of ram puts more of a strain on the memory controller, so they wont overclock as well, but you wont notice too much of a difference in performance, maybe a tiny bit worse, but nothing noticeable. BTW 500th post!

Just another question, can I mix my current CL8 memory with the new CL9 memory, as they don't have my current RAM anymore?

i dont see why not, i mean memory these days is almost always compatible as long as it is ddr3.
