EPS powersupply

Thread Starter
I came across this power supply and was curious if it was a good deal or not.

http://www.directron.com/t85ssib.html

Also, its an EPS rather than ATX the size of the unit won't matter in the application I would use it in, but does the fact that it is EPS have any handicaps vs the ATX?

It looks like it has all the right connectors. Here is the newegg version + some reviews: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703002 . Maybe it's not short enough to fit some ATX form factor builds? Maybe it's a typo on the company specs and they ment EPS/ATX? I'm not really sure. I just thought I'd link you the reviews and additional information.

EPS is just an addon to the ATX standard that mainly concerns high wattage units\server style setups. There's sometimes a few extra 12V 4-pin connectors provided for server motherboards, and the main 12V connector is 8-pin (found on high-end retail boards as well) vs the usual 4-pin 12V. Other connectors are the same (24-pin ATX, molex, SATA etc).

Seems reasonably priced to me, lots of power for the $. Anyone else have opinions about the value here?

Hmm, it'll be very noisy as it uses an 80mm fan, but I presume that won't be a problem for your uses? The other point of concern is the condition of a refurb unit, especially if it's been running at high temperatures inside a server for years (I've seen this model reach 58C at full load).

Assuming the system you're buying it for actually needs 850W, why not spend the ~$70 more on a brand new unit?

Noise wont be a problem.
I'm thinking of buying 3 of these, building a benching table with stations for 3 platforms all ready to play without having to do the usual swap hdd/optical/monitor/ psu dance that I end up doing whenever a competition pops up ( i am motivated by laziness biggrin.gif ). The cost of 3 psu's new would be too much for me.
They claim to be better than average psu's at delivering clean power = good for benching.

You're planning to have three 850W systems running at once on a test bench with these PCP&C TurboCools? Good luck surviving that abuse to the ears tongue.gif

What exactly are you going to connect? I can't give you a sensible recommendation without knowing what hardware will be drawing power from the PSU.

My basic thought is that I would have 3 racks, ready for almost anything . The most demanding possible setup for now would be a 2600k with dual 4870 x2's on it...... overclocked, it might be a strain for an 850. Future plans are for bigger and better equipment and perhaps a divorce....lol. Maybe I should go with the 1200 watt they have for $89?
I seem to end up with my " junk" strung all over the basement whenever I want to play- just looking for a way to better manage my hobby given the space I have to work with.
