YLOD PS3 FIX

Thread Starter
my little brother just got the ps3 on YLOD ... any help ?

could it be a hard drive fail ?
Most of the time the YLOD is an overheating issue. Let it rest for a while before trying to start it up. I know it's not what you want to hear but both of the YLOD I've had (one mine, one of a friend) couldn't be fixed with any of the online/youtube methods and had to be sent in
post #3 of 20
It could be a few things...

1. Power Supply could be bad
2. Thermal paste on the CPU and GPU could be old and cracked
3. Soldering may have cracked somewhere on the mainboard, usually from overheating
4. The system is simply overheated and needs to cool down

How old is it?

I got the ylod on my old 80 gb ps3 fat last year, a few months out of warranty, and that was after very light use its 1st 7 months (netflix and the occasional blue ray and no gaming) Rather then fix it I bought a 180 gb slim and parted out the old one. I think I made almost $200 selling the parts on ebay, so the slim only cost me $150 with a 3yr extended warranty. I also bought an add on cooler for it just as extra insurance, although i dont think the slims have the ylod issues

Cooling is not the issue, it's the lead free solder that Sony uses to attached the CPU and GPU to the mainboard. It can't handle the heat-cycling as well as lead solder.

well if you do it right it doesn't need doing ever again that means other mods to go along with the reflow.

You can reflow the board yourself in the oven if your brave.

I've done this. There's not too much to it.

The PS3 mobo bakes just like a video card. thumb.gif

Make sure to get some No Clean flux and dab a few drops behind the CPU/GPU and memory chips before baking.
