Just one or two questions.

Alright. Haven't posted for a while, but those who remember my posts know that I am lord of the eternally cheap. However, my little XP 2000+ is starting to feel a little sluggish, and I'm hoping that maybe I could get a new XP before people start charging me an arm and a leg and a liver for a chip. I know I should save for a new PC, but I'm probably stuck with this one until I head off to college (two more years). So I wanna stretch it out as long as possible. I've been browsing Pricewatch, eBay, and Froogle to see what chips are going for, and I've noticed the following prices.

Athlon XP 2400 (the slowest I would go) - $56 for a Thorton core
XP 2600 (333MHz Barton core) - $65
XP-M 2500 (not sure if it would work with my board or not) -$70
XP 2600 (333MHz T-bred core) - $79
XP 2900 (400MHz Barton core) - $79

Definatly take the 2600 Barton, it's by far the best value on the list. It can easily be overclocked to the 400mhz FSB of the 2900, but for much less. The Bartons have 512kb of L2 instead of the 256kb Thortons. Very quick chip, you'll be amazed how much difference that extra L2 cache makes.

EDIT: UberNOOB is selling his 2600 Barton, which has an unlocked multiplier, for $45 plus shipping.

Okay, that's what I thought would be the one to snag. Only thing is that the place that has it wants $8 for shipping (it's a CPU!!), which bumps the price to $72.

This is off topic but is Soyo still around? I loved their old Socket A and 754 boards.

Nah, they bailed out about a year ago now. Now they make all sorts of stuff for the Asian market. Worst motherboard I've ever touched, though. Probably worse than the DFI P2XLX I had for my Pentium II 300.
