I'm kinda dissapointed in my results

I set out to put together a machine on a shoestring budget, that would at minimum be able to play some of today's games. What I ended up with is this:

mach Speed P4MBMS VIA Socket 775 - $50
Celeron 341 D 2.93Ghz/245k,533MHz - $49
EVGA GeForce 6600 GT 128M DDR3 AGP $79
ThermalTake Golden Orb II fan - $27
Seagate 160GB 7200/8MB/Sata-150 - $59
Ultra 1024Mb PC3200 DDR 400MHz - $89
Just4PC Gazelle ATX Mid case/450W PS - $49

All prices are after rebates, and including a new win XP license I spent less than $550 shipped. It went together quicker than snot and fired up on the first try. I let things run at stock levels for a while and decided it was time to start clocking then benchmark.

I have the CPU running at 3.1Ghz right now, with the memory at stock speed 400Mhz. The vid card I have clocked up about 7.5% stable with no artifacts. If I tweak the RAM speed any more at all, i get little white specks, and one more notch yields large blotchy patches of artifacts, SO i'm right at the edge of what my box will give me without serious mods, which at that point, i'd rather go the new route again

My 3dMark03 score is trifling. 8879

Any ideas on what I can tweak?

Honest opinion? Lose the celly. While I think the 6600GT is a great price/performance card, don't expect some incredible benches out of it

The celeron D is kickin your butt though. What can you expect from a 550 dollar rig!

You should be able to OC that CPU a LOT higher. I believe someone posted not too long ago about OCing a Celeron to 5 GHz! However, I've never heard of that brand of mobo, so that could probably limit your OC, as will your PSU. Not sure what your score SHOULD be for 3DMark03, but it seems it should be at least a little higher. Really don't know what to tell you. It's a budget box, and a fairly able budget box. For the price, it's a good rig, but don't expect to play FEAR on it. I can't even play FEAR maxed out, so don't aim so high. Try playing Half Life 2 at fairly low detail, see how it plays, as that'll be more realistic than a benchmark as far as gaming performance goes.

Without the rebates, this rig was nearly 900 bucks, so i expect a LITTLE more than what I ended up with. I just hit some crazy timing with the 'bates. I can swap out the cpu easy enough, you really think it's the worst bottleneck in the setup?

Unless you clock it up more, yes, I think it's the biggest bottleneck.

Gte a Pentium D 805 (assuming your mobo supports it) and you wil lget a LOT better performance. However, if your mobo doesn't OC well, you won't reach the full potential of any CPU.

I think you should have got a pentium D 805 (mobo supports it) and some better RAM like DDR2-533. Max the mobo supports. Good build for $550 tho.

Hmm (shouldn't really start a sentence with hmm to be honest) I do not see why your score is that low. I would expect it to be slightly higher than that, at least 10,000 in 3DMark 03 I would have hoped.

All drivers for hardware are installed and IRQ's are singular? (Single device assigned per IRQ).

Agree with X. The Intel Celeron will be the bottleneck in this application as it is incapable of executing enough data in a given time to match the Graphics Processing Unit installed in your computer system (namely 6600GT).

Unfortunately with your Intel Celeron multiple "Capacity Misses" will occur during execution of data and the running of your system.
Capacity Misses occur when the cache is not large enough to store all the needed values that the processor needs. With less than 1MB L2 cache (16+12KB L1) you will have multiple misses occur as the cache (as mentioned) is not large enough for heavy use.
Due to this, major strain will be placed upon your system memory, which is operating at 200MHz DDR (400MHz) Dual.

Increasing your memory speed will counteract the memory issue in regards to transferring data to cache at high rates per cycle.

I would suggest, knowing that the cache misses will be great in games, that you increase the memory speed to at least 500MHz (if it is capable of operating at those frequencies). VDIMM and DRAM Timings can be altered of course to help obtain that goal

Overall not a bad system. Should be scoring higher though, so there must also be a few issues (software based) that aren't exactly helping.

Processor bus speed increasement will help reduce the bottleneck of direct CPU > GPU data transfers. Whereas Core/ALU/FPU clock speed will help with executing data in parallel with the graphics processing unit

as far as gaming goes, i can only complain a LITTLE. BF2142 is horrible. i run it at 800x600 low low low and still only manage about 30 fps until PB kicks me for no apparent reason.

BF2 on the other hand runs at 40-45 fps at 1024x768 mediums. BHD cranked up runs at 55fps and has been a nice relaxing trip down memory lane. I got my nickname back too...they call me "the Melon Splitter"

FS 2004 does well too. i run steady 50-55 with details on med to high.

Capable rig, yeah. I dunno, guess i needed a reality check...thanks guys!

The_Manual, I was trying to stay away from clocking my system ram based on some older reading which i've lost the link to. i'm willing to try to squeeze blood from a turnip on this one as broken parts yield me the lattitude to replace them whereas random parts upgrades are fearfully frowned upon by the wife unit. If it's BROKEN though...it NEEDS replaced, riigghhhtt???
