How to cool my room and computer indirectly? - Page 5

I've dealt with this problem over the years and have learned a thing or two. This is what has worked best for me. I have had several computers and all their peripherals in a 250 sq ft room with temperatures staying around 87 F and with a few tricks lowered it to around 78 F.

1. Get room darking insulated curtains. You mileage will vary depending on room orientation and amount of solar radiation.

2. Get a fan. Fans will not lower your air temperature but they do keep the air mixed (They will make you feel cooler if you are sweating which is a plus). Something to think about is that a ceiling fan will only circulate air in the room even with the door open. It will not draw air into the room. A fan on the floor pulling air in from the hallway will normalize the room temperature a bit with the rest of the apartment.

3. Close any vents in rooms that are not being used. If there is a return in the room seal it up so only cool is pushed into the room from the AC. The system will be fine because it will just pull air from another room. (This pressure gradient will help to move air out of the room thus mixing the air with the rest of your apartment.)

4. Move anything that produces heat out of the room that doesn't need to be in there. E.g. routers, modems, switches, old light bulbs (switch to cool leds or similar.) A infrared thermometer can be useful to find out what is really adding heat to a room.

A portable AC unit is one of the better solutions but those things can be noisy and you have to deal with the drain pans and routing exhaust out of a window. The more expensive ones that are drain less or say you don't need to route the exhaust elsewhere haven't worked for me. My final solution as I just got tired of fooling with things was to drill a hole through the wall and get extension cables and put everything under my floor. I built a shelf that hangs from the ceiling in my basement underground and the computers sit in a room that never gets above 70 F. Obviously that won't work for the OP but might be a solution for someone else.

I struggled with this issue for a long time; small room in a small house. then I realized ... OCing isn't necessary wink.gif

do you realize how much extra heat is produced by OCing? it's not a couple watts or a degree or two unless it's a mild OC -- .2v over stock will raise my room temperature 8C at IDLE! at load the difference was almost 10C higher than at stock (again, room temperature - not core temp).

the ten seconds (SSD baby!) it takes to restart, load a different OC profile, and boot back up (assuming I want to disable/enable cores - if it's just frequency/vcore, I can change that within Windows) is totally worth it versus a hot ass room running a high OC 24/7.

I keep my 960T at 1.6Ghz (200x8, 0.88v) with only two cores enabled for general usage. Plenty enough to play 1080p videos and do general tasks. When I wanna play Skyrim, I enable two more cores and up to 4400 it goes. smile.gif

even with a GTX 560 and my door closed in a small room, it takes days for my room to get toasty unless I'm gaming.

After a year later my setup changed a lot but my room temp did not.

Ambient Room Temp became 35 degrees at times so I just installed an air conditioner to the room today.

The ambient temperature of the room is now 29. It is still high right guys?

Yeah, I'd be uncomfortable if it were that hot in here. Yuck. Can you bring it down to about 21-23? I expect 22-23 to feel the best. 21 might be just a little on the cold side.

I am trying hard. The thing is that my room was around 35ish degrees for a while now and the air conditioner that has been working for 4 hours lowered it to 29. I am guessing in time the temp will be even cooler.

If I close the door of the room, I am guessing that I can keep even more cool air inside.

I will be happy if I can get to 25.

This is the hottest room in our apartmant. We live on the top floor and when the sun rises it is usually on our side. So many minuses.
