I felt that same way about the General Knoxx one, never finished it either.
The pirate DLC for 2 is nothing like that, though. Gearbox learned their lesson, and put in regular checkpoints just like the main game. I was really impressed with the DLC. It added quite a lot to the game, and that treasure room part at the end is freakin' EPIC. I'd recommend playing with friends, or solo for that part though. The loot is too appealing, and it will likely be ninja'd out from underneath you in public multiplayer.
