Faulty PSU effects on components?

I had the psu in my details running on my PC. Over the course of months I had experienced weird stability issues. Eventually I had to restore default settings and pull a video card out to get the PC running. My wife and I have a 22 month old daughter so my PC time is very limited which plays a big role in my procrastination about troubleshooting.

I originally had G.Skill RAM but it became faulty and I went with three sticks of 8gb Samsung 30nm. For a couple months the PC ran fine but then the freezes and reboots started. Software also began showing voltage deviations well beyond ATX spec. I started an RMA with Sparkle, which was a nightmare, and by chance I got a direct HQ # which always got me the RMA dept during business hours. For the hassle I went through I was sent a 1000 watt 80+ Gold replacement.

I know replacements can be refurb but this thing's boxed and looks completely new. If it's not new I'd be incredibly surprised. The thing is, I've read some horror stories about this brand PSU, which at time of purchase didn't exist. Could the old 850 have killed my original RAM? What components can be easily affected/broken by a faulty PSU? The 850 I'm replacing died a day after I was told a new PSU was on its way to me, with the PC turning off and on while the PSU made an audible clicking. I ask this because if this psu is good, and I experience stability issues, I want to have an idea of what could be messed up and/or if the old psu could've caused it.

Thanks!

anytime a PSU (of anything, not just a PC) may be providing unstable voltage or current, it can cause failures in electronic components. (blown resistors, caps, damaged traces, etc.)

do you have another unit that you can test with? I have not heard bad things about Sparkle's video cards, but I didn't even know they made a PSU. My personal preference is to stick with Seasonic or Corsair.

Jonnyguru had an amazing review of their 1250w model. I'd used Sparkle video cards in the past and took a gamble on the 850. Maybe tonight, definitely by tomorrow, I'll have the new 1000 watt psu installed. The decent part of the RMA was that Sparkle just sent me a new, upgraded replacement without having to send mine in. I also have double the cables, and the old defective PSU. So I only have to fiddle with how the two non-modular cables are affixed to my tower. The rest of the cables look identical and I was hoping to save time by leaving them in place, is this acceptable? They look identical and the wires are the same size/type.

Personally I would never use a sparkle PSU in any of my machines... just not worth the risk

Well, I don't think they're continuing in the PSU. dept, but I have no choice in buying a different PSU.

If I recall correctly, Sparkle PSUs are FSP built. FSP used to be good back in the ATX1.3 days, but they've become largely mediocre since the move to PCI-Express systems. The Aurum Gold is getting there but still not that great.

FSP Aurum Pro and Xilenser are very good and up there. Aurum, cable management version (modular) and regular, not so much.

But the OP is talking about Sparkle Computer Corp, not Sparkle Power Inc. (SPI). SPI uses FSP. Sparkle Computer Corp's lineup is just those 80 plus gold power supplies with purple highlighting, from Great Wall.

That's the closest thing for an in-depth review I could find, and it's favorable.

There's nothing wrong with the Sparkle Gold Class units, on the contrary, they're very competent PSUs, the chances of you getting two defective parts in a row, that would display more or less the same problematic behavior, is very low... I'd look for the problem elsewhere.

In that case, disregard my earlier post.
