Gigabyte GA-A75N won't run @ 1600Mhz

post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
Hey guys,

So I built a budget PC with

AMD A8-3870K

Gigabyte GA-A75N-USB3

Corsair XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) Memory Kit PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3

The problem is is just refuses to run at 1600Mhz, always gives warning and overclock failed messages.

Any suggestions?

RMA it. its supposed to work at stock speeds.

Do you have access to any other DDR3 computers, or DDR3 itself for that matter.

You'll want to rule out the Motherboard or the RAM one way or the other.

You need to up the CPU/NB frequency, iirc this was a problem with some AM3 systems as well. The freq was set at default at 2 GHz when the required freq is 3x the freq of the dimms, hence why at stock the dimms would run at 1333MHz instead of the advertised 1600. I don't know the technical details but that was the gist of the problem.

1600 = 2x 800MHz (per dimm)
1333 = 2x 667MHz

800 x 3 = 2.4GHz
667 x 3 = 2001MHz

Stock CPU/NB = 2GHz
Required clock for 1600 RAM = 2400MHz

Since AMD systems don't use XMP profiles on the dimms you cant just load up setting like on intel systems, I don't know if this is changed with the mobos that the A8 uses but this was the most common problem when using 1600 RAM on AMD builds. I'm also talking from personal experience too since my RAM required me to up the clock on the cpu/nb before it started working at the advertised clocks

If you have an Intel system all the better, test if they work properly and if they do then load up the XMP profiles and write down the settings that it applies. You'll need it for when you apply the manual settings on the AMD system since its not automatic frown.gif

Check your secondary timings, particularly the tRFC.  Could you provide a screenshot of your BIOS options for memory?

Try putting the DRAM E.O.C.P to disabled and keep the memory clock at 8x.

Move your timings from auto to manual and set everything manually.  Memory multiplier at x8; do not enable DRAM EOCP; set your timings as so:

Command Timing: 2T
CAS: 9
RAS-CAS: 9
Row precharge: 9
Min RAS time: 24
Trfc0 and Trfc1: set BOTH to 160ns

Try to keep your DRAM voltage at 1.5.

This will be worth the effort because at 1333Mhz your CPU & GPU are being bottlenecked.
