Poor Battery Life?

Thread Starter
My MBP (13" 2012) gets unimpressive battery life. I have wifi on, Xcode and Chrome open. Bluetooth is off and I am at 50% brightness (screen and keyboard).

I am only at 3:30 (76% batter remaining). Does this seem odd to anyone? On CNET, they posted 415 minutes running video on this laptop. Any reason I cannot get anywhere close to this suggested number?

How's the battery health? You can check under System Profiler > Power.

Edit: Notably there seem to be a lot of people experiencing rather poor battery life in the Lions. See this and this.

I was thinking it may have to do with lion. If i installed Snow Leopard, would it have any effect on my windows partition?

Install coconut battery and see what it says.

As a reference, my laptop is 23 months old, has 723 cycles, 80% life, and it can go for 6 hours at 100% charged.

Keep your macbook connected whenever possible to save its health!! I made a mistake of charging it to 100% then let it drain down to nearly 0% then recharge it again. I used to play games on it too so you can imagine how fast I go through each cycles. My room mate's macbook air is almost a year old and he barely reaches 100 cycles.

Snow Leopard won't install, you cannot install any OS lower than the one it shipped with..

Google SMC reset..

but you need to see how long your battery really lasts not what the little battery indicator says

I know haha. Just need to find time to go through a full battery at once.

Also, that is extremely annoying that one cannot rollback to an older version. tongue.gif
Not that I'm going to go to all of this trouble to install Snow Leopard, but couldn't I just format the drive with a third-party boot disc or use a different harddrive? Or is this need for the version it shipped with more hardware-level?

No, it doesn't contain the necessary drivers (kexts)

I'd try Disk Utility. Hit 'repair permissions' and see what happens. smile.gif

Also, I'd upgrade to Mountain Lion if I were you. Seeing as you only have 15 cycles on your laptop I reckon it's probably next to brand new, meaning you can make use of the upgrade program and get it for free.
If you prefer a clean install you can browse the contents of the mountain lion installer, then go to Contents/SharedSupport, and restore InstallESD.dmg to a DVD (dual layer) or even better, a partition on an external harddrive, and boot/install from there.

But, if you really want to you can probably get 10.6 running on there if you have a different Mac that's supported it (clean install, update fully, time machine backup, then restore on your new MBP). You'll probably lose some, if not all power management options though, so battery life will probably be even worse tongue.gif

What's that supposed to mean? 3 hours 30 mins or 3 minutes 30 seconds?

Because if it's 3 hours 30 mins that's about right. The advertises battery life (which is actually the same settings as you say you have it at) is 7 hours.

One thing to watch out for: Flash!!!!

Flash animation on websites eats battery life in no time! It's enough to have one or several webpages open that run Flash and you'll see how your battery time goes down. Not all Flash content is bad, but many websites have poorly programmed Flash content, or use it excessively.

You can easily check that. Open Applications/Utilities/Activity monitor and list according to CPU usage. Or by name and see if Safari web content and/or Flash Player use up excessive CPU resources.

Hope it helps.
