Need help with new Galaxy S2

Thread Starter
I'm pretty new to the whole smartphone community and I'm struggling to understand all the terminology of roms/launchers etc.

Primarily I want to theme my phone to make it look pretty biggrin.gif but i also want to find out what custom roms (amongst other things) has to offer.

I was reading some stickies on XDA developers but I don't really understand anything redface.gif.

It was pretty simple on my ipod to customize, jailbreaking/cydia/winterboard, the likes, but it seems a tad more complicated with android. The concept is probably the same though....right?
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Yes, the process appears to be roughly similar. Look for the appropriate subforum on XDA, and try to follow the directions.

Just for your sake for the future, try not to bump before 24 hours, and this forum is slightly slower than some of the other ones on OCN, so just be a little bit more patient when waiting for a reply.

What model S2 do you have?

Rom = The software on your phone. Alot of roms will have tweaks to make your phone faster and get rid of a lot of carrier apps (AT&T Navigation)
Launcher = Changes your dock/app drawer. If you don't like Touchwiz (launcher) you can try GO Launcher (free) just to see the difference. Launchers don't require you to be rooted or have a custom rom, It's just another way of customizing your phone.

I have an i9100, factory unlocked.

I was browsing some deviantart android screenshots and I want to implement some clocks/widgets that I think are pretty. Sometimes the user will just upload a photoshop (.psd) file and I was wondering how one would go about using that.

Are launchers relatively easy to swap? Can I change from one launcher to another within my phone?
Yup, just download and install the new launcher. You should be given the choice between the new launcher and the stock launcher the next time you hit the home button. I recommend Nova Launcher.

If you have an I9100 you have the holy grail of S2s. I would definitely recommend going on XDA and getting rooted and installing a custom kernel. From there you can easily flash roms (even the Cyanogenmod 10 Jelly Bean preview).

Nova is only for ICS and up.

How do I go about installing a custom Kernel? I also have the I9100.

Infact, First you need to flash CWM (Clock Work Mod Recovery). Basically it allows you flash to locked partitions of the device, allowing you to flash Custom ROM's, Custom Kernels, Update zips etc.
Then, You download a ROM for the i9100. HAS TO BE A I9100 ROM. NOT OTHER PHONE. (As said, Maybe a JB Rom, Or ICS Rom).
Then place this downloaded ROM onto your SD Card, Boot into CWM and flash it.

Simple as smile.gif

If i have to recommend ROM's, Id say either CyangoenMod 9/10 or AOKP Milestone 6, Or last but not least, ParanoidAndroid.
