Finally a good explanation. I'll get right to it then.

Can anybody provide a quick explanation on how editing icons/status bars/docks, etc via photoshop is possible?

Then, You download a ROM for the i9100. HAS TO BE A I9100 ROM. NOT OTHER PHONE. (As said, Maybe a JB Rom, Or ICS Rom).
Then place this downloaded ROM onto your SD Card, Boot into CWM and flash it.
Simple as smile.gif
If i have to recommend ROM's, Id say either CyangoenMod 9/10 or AOKP Milestone 6, Or last but not least, ParanoidAndroid.

No, first step is getting root. Then you will have to install a custom kernel with CWM. With the S2, the recovery is part of the kernel. From there you would flash roms through the recovery.

I'm still confused as to how people are able to customize the look of their home screen. Sometimes I see screenshots of people's phones that don't even have status bars or "unorthodox" app grids.

I want to be able to customize my phone like the users have done here.

First you're going to root. There are sets on XDA to do so without hitting the flash counter. I used steps 2c for rooting and 3c for pushing recovery:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081

Once that's done, you're rooted and have custom recovery. Then it's up to finding a rom. I have been using AOKP which is pretty much stock Android with a bunch of customization extras. CM10 and JB roms are starting to come up and getting pretty stable so you can go with that as well.

Head over to the development section and you can see the different roms going on.

To customize your screen, there are different ways to do it. Some are based on roms, some on apps. MIUI changes your UI and has a ton of custom themes built in. CM/AOKP has themes in the market that you can install. Others are just apps that change icons and what-not. If you like a theme you see, as the owner what he used, usually they will share the info.

Thanks for the reply, however my model is the i9100, I should probably find the appropriate versions of these binaries then? Or do they work with my phone also?

edit: holy **** I'm literally getting a headache trying to figure this **** out. XDA forums are pretty messy and definitely does not cater to noobies. frown.gif

This was much easier on my itouch..........isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

No, Android is for the enthusiast.

I was pretty overwhelmed at the start.

This is the easiest guide I found to rooting. What you're doing is using Clockword Mod Recovery temporarily just to root your device. Clockwork Mod Recovery is just something you need to flash custom ROM/Kernel on your phone. You're going to use it to update the root file into your phone.

After that's done, you can use that same Clockword Mod Recovery (Update to Clockwork Mod Recovery) and install zip from SDcard, then select the custom ROM you want and it's done!

The reason I wanted a custom ROM was so I could undervolt my CPU to have longer lasting battery. I've been using -25mV for a while and think I might go one step lower. I do get some app crashes, but I'm pretty sure these cannot be attributed to the undervolted CPU, but just bad coding.

Sorry, I assumed you had the i777. Once you read through it, it actually is pretty simple. And once rooted, flashing ROMs require only a few clicks on your phone's recovery and some time to set it up again or recover your backups.

Here's a list of guides and tutorials for the SGSII - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826497

as nolonger said above, head over to the i9100 forums. He posted the root method. Check the forum stickies in the development section and it should have everything needed.

As for ROMs, it's all up to preference what you want. There are a whole bunch from Samsung Touchwiz to AOSP/AOKP/CM which are basically stock Google roms with enhancements.

I think I kinda got it.

How come I can only access the root of my phone through a 3rd party program like android commander instead of straight through the USB?

I also flashed the MIUI rom which is totally sick and I was trying to find the icon for the browser so that I can replace the firefox icon with it. I located the APK in the zip folder of the rom but I couldn't find the image. The icon is purple and the closest thing I found was a translucent version of the icon that had a different aspect ratio. Is it possible the rom crops AND colours the icon?

Also, while trying to add a HS wallpaper - I don't remember if this was an issue with stock rom/launcher (using launcherpro atm) - but there are these two extra boxes beside the main crop selector. I have my wallpaper settings set to NOT SCROLL/static wallpaper and yet when I'm trying to crop an image for a homescreen, it gives those two little extra boxes that won't allow me to fit the outer edges of an image in.

You can click the little box with a single rectangle on the bottom.
