Need help about OCZ Z 850 Power supply!!

Thread Starter
im going to be building a new computer. i have almost all parts collected. and cannot decide on the PSU. initially i do not plan to overclock however i may overclock a month or two down the line.

My current parts consist of

Intel Core i7 3770K
Cooler Master Hyper 212+
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB @ 1866
Asus GT430 graphics card (i dont game. i only use it to rip and encode blurays and occasional video/photo editing)
OCZ vertex 3 120GB SSD
Seagate Barrracuda XT 3TB
Plextor Bluray Burner drive

I RMA'd an old PSU i had sitting around and OCZ is sending me back an OCZ Z 850W PSU. ive been reading review and everyone seems to have a mixed opinion. Is it PSU good for this setup? or should i also consider purchasing a new PSU?

i may overclock to 4.0GHz in the near future and also upgrade the graphics card at some point if i need the additional graphic power. for now i need the most cpu processing power i can get for encoding.

Depends on your future upgrade path and how much you want to spend- are you going to keep your pc for 8 years or 8 months before you build another one?
Ive had no issues with my ocz 1000w gold certified- but ive only had it 6 months and cant speak for longevity. Roswell psus have great reviews but are also verry pricy yet produce some of the cleanest energy you can get. In my case - im probably going to sell this 1000w in the near future and buy the evga 1500w psu so i wont have to worry about future upgrade path to an sr-2 or any 4 way sli or crossfire configuration. Someone else should have some more input on which brands have shown best quality and longevity providing cleanest power

What you have there is a <250W system at full load, the Z 850 is a solid unit (not a brilliant one though), but severely oversized.

Whats the wattage breakdown on that setup original sin?

CPU ~ 100W (with solid overclocks)
VGA around 50-60W
everything else ~ 50W (at most)

So with everything running synthetics simultaneously you might see numbers slightly above 200W.

holy crap, 850 would be overkill of gargantuan proportions. Just get a good 350-400 watt from antec/corsair/rosewill and call it a day man.

From what I've noticed people tend to look down on OCZ because they are cheap and not a Corsair or similar. I've had my OCZ 700w for 4 years now and haven't had a single hiccup. The most you will probably hit with a current gen setup is about 550-600w. The only reason people need 800-1200w of power is if they are getting multiple GPUs and OC'ing a ton. For a basic setup, with 1 GPU, you could easily get by and OC on like 500w. I got a 700 back in the day because I thought about doing Crossfire but I never did. If you're getting the 850w for free, keep it and don't worry about buying another.

EDIT: You can use this to estimate your PSU wattage needs. It's not 100% accurate but it will give you an idea of what you will need. http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/

Here's a few benches.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_430/26.html
Using a $1500 testing equipment to measure it at DC output, 51w during Furmark - not in a typical working regime that the TS will be doing.

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/04/23/intel-core-i7-3770k-review/8

244w from the wall with an 4.8GHz overclock @ 1.34v and has an idled GTX 590 and the rest of the hardware. Assuming 85% efficiency, that's 204w (it used a Enermax Silver efficiency PSU and the load is near 20%). Subtract 50w for the idled 590 now, you got 154w.

Totaling to 205w, which back up Original Sin statement of "What you have there is a <250W system at full load" and "so with everything running synthetics simultaneously you might see numbers slightly above 200W".
