I used a BE-2400 (a 45w, 2.3 ghz Brisbane dual core) for several years on my main HTPC and it is now in my kids and have never had any issues with it (except trying to use it with a 785g onboard video, it just could not keep up). So long as you have even a semi decent GPU (I use a HD4350) you should be fine with most anything.

I have an AM3 Sempron (140) using onboard 785g in my bedroom HTPC and it works fine (CPU useage is high though, but not a big deal with an aftermarket cooler) and an Athlon II x2 220 in the main HTPC with onboard 785g with no issues either.

Well, I think I'm gonna go with an Athlon II x2 240e. I can get one for $35 locally, and it seems like it should be perfect.

Now, what video card should I pair up with it? Something affordable that I can do light gaming on (mostly source based stuff). I want this rig to double as a lan rig.
In progress.

Yes. My parents use an E-350 Zacate platform which has about half the CPU power of your chip.

1080p and bluray are no problem.

A small card would do the trick. I've done a couple HTPC's with 5450's and they work wonders.

5450 is a good htpc card but won't really suffice for anything besides very light flash type based gaming

Something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102988 would get you started in the right direction

Not really. I have managed to run SCII on medium quality on a 1 GB 9400 GT, and on high on a 5450. Plus i can play Source games (specifically Portal and HL2) with low-med quality on my laptop with a crappy Mobile Intel 945 iGPU.

5450 can run games well, just don't expect to crank quality to the top. 66x0 cards are way too overkill, but a 65x0/55x0 may be your best bet for a bit more of gaming performance.

The Source game I will be spending the most time on is L4D2. Mostly for multiplayer/lan purposes. I'll also be playing CS:GO when it comes out, too. Being able to handle GW2 couldn't hurt, either.

Source games, being DX9 based, aren't hard on the hardware, but if you plan to use that rig 50% HTPC 50% lan gaming rig, get a decent card. HTPC-only cards aren't really good for gaming, though they can manage. If you plan to build a cheapo rig which can do both, look at a GT 430/440 or 55x0/65x0 card. Best balance between price and features, but a bit more powerful card may be in order if your budget allows.

My own HTPC's GTS 450 is an absurd overkill, but it is powerful enough that i can be running BOINC and watching a bluray without stuttering smile.gif
