Apple might be the world's most valuable company, with a market capitalisation of $556bn (£354bn), but its design chief insists it is not in business for the money.

Sir Jonathan Ive, the man credited with shaping the iPad and iPhone and whose personal fortune is estimated at $130m, said today that Apple's guiding principal was nothing to do with its balance sheet, instead it simply wanted to make "great products".

"Our goal isn't to make money. Our goal absolutely at Apple is not to make money. This may sound a little flippant, but it's the truth," said the British designer. "Our goal and what gets us excited is to try to make great products. We trust that if we are successful people will like them, and if we are operationally competent we will make revenue, but we are very clear about our goal."

Ferrari aren't trying to claim they're not in it for the money. So, your comment makes no sense whatsoever.

Also this isn't wholly true either.

Are you guys for real? Those cars are worth every penny. Nothing about them are over rated. Your paying for performance, luxury and craftsmanship. You can't say that about Apple products...and I own some.

Full machined aluminium chasis w/ gorrila glass for laptops and tablets with minimal-to-no-plastic and amazing customer support list go in 3...2...1...

And one of the only reasons they don't use ips panels is because they aren't thin enough to meet the form factor they're looking for. Although they use some really nice tn panel.

This. according to Foxconn's(they are not called that but people know them by this name) CEO they gets $2 dollar off one iphone, some Korea company gets $7, Japan company gets $11, while apple gets $200. This was in news in Asia because the CEO is not pleased how much they get payed.

Lots of CEO earn that much or some really small amount (to them).
They real earning is from bonus.

Sorry to break your bubble, but people don't get rich by earning $1 per year.

Really? He was a billionair and kept all his money for himself like the selfish, control-freak bastard he was. He made billions from all the Apple shares he held, from the bonuses and even more money from Pixar. I seriously hope you're not believing yourself, he was all about the money.

By the way, a Ferrari, a Maserati, a Lamborghini, etc. has that value because it's rare, not many are made and they're made to be the best, by the bests. An iPhone or an iPad is a mainstream piece of garbage mass-produced by skill-less people in a huge factory so yes, for what you're getting, it's extremly overpriced.

Zero innovation. They took ideas that already existed and added some great marketing skills while using their god-like level of woreshipping from their fanboys.

Maybe you should find a suitable place to explain how you make it.

Someone that's just all about the money does not work their ass off still when they know they're DYING. They don't put on a smile and still do Keynotes while they're in obvious pain. That requires passion, dedication, and complete obsession. They obviously love what they do down there and if they can profit from it, than good, that enables them to keep doing so and hopefully keep doing it better. Money drives business but who drives the businesses and what are their true motives?

And why shouldn't he be able to keep the money to himself? He made it didn't he? He worked his butt off for it did he not? When's the last time you've heard of a CEO that's the first one in the office and the last one out? (hint: there's not many). Just because it's not about the money doesn't mean you throw it all out the window.
