Computer keeps cutting out?

Hi there,

I have an 900w modular PSU that seems to be cutting out.

It first happened about a week ago. I was playing Civ 5, GPU temps seemed fine - at the time I wasn't checking CPU temps.

It cut off and wouldn't turn back on (although it did seem to start to spin the fans for a split second). The PSU was rather hot (might be normal?).

I left it and then came back about an hour later. It booted up ok. I decided to check CPU temps, they were ok.

After being on the PC for another hour or so it cut out again. Same problem, wouldn't turn back on.

It has been like this since last week but now is alot worse. It will only boot up for around 5-10minutes and then will cut out and not come back on unless I turn it off from the back of the PSU and try again later. PSU still cold obviously as the PC is hardly used before it cuts out.

Any ideas? I pretty sure its the PSU but want to confirm this and make sure it's unfixable before I order an replacement.

^ Most likely a dud. How long have you had this PSU? Your system isn't drawing close to 900w.

PSU is about 18 months old. I do have a spare cheap 600w but not sure it I should use it while looking for a replacement modular. Especially since it does not have 6pin PCI-E so I would have to use 2x molex adapters to power my 6870.

Yeah, 600w without pci-e connectors is a definite no-no. Your 900w seems dead, what make and model is it though?

It's a Generic one, have no idea of the actual brand.

I'm looking at getting an 750w 80+ modular to replace it, should be more than powerful enough, right?

All you need for your signature system is a solid 400W (or above) PSU.

Where are you buying from?.. ebuyer, scan?

ps. upload a picture with your current PSU please, or provide a shop link to it.

Depends where is cheapest thumb.gif.

I normally use ebuyer or box.co.uk. Do you have any recommendations? Are you sure 400w would cut it, on a PSU calculator I used it said 600?

I can upload picture once I get home, I'm at work at the moment.

Indeed I am, unless you have two 6870s, then what you have there is a ~350W system at full load.

Please do that, a pic with the PSU sticker, or simply provide a link to the product.

Here you go, this is the cheapest unit I'd recommend (solid FSP design, really good price), while this is a slightly higher end unit, quieter and modular as well, at a very good price also.

I'm definitely a fan of Thermaltake's. I run 2 myself on spare PC's, one in my AMD rig which is a TR-2 line PSU. It's running a GTX 480 and an unlocked 960T no problem.
