OSX Server... won't power on, no idea where to start to diagnose

Thread Starter
I got an OSX rack mount 1U server. I plug in power, but nothing lights up. Tried apples support site and they suggest resetting the power supply circuit. Did this to no avail.

How do you suggest I diagnose from here? Anyone ever been through this and can give some insight?

Go to www.craigslist.com, select your city, post a for sale thread, and get what you can for it...and go buy a Windows server. biggrin.gif

Kidding, but if you aren't getting any lights, fans spinning, or LEDs on the motherboard (if those exist)...then you definitely have a power issue. Verify the main power connections to the motherboard are good and solid, try a different outlet, and a different cable. If no dice...then you possibly have a failed PSU...and I don't know anything about Apples and how you can fix that.

Going to start with the PMU battery since it's way lower voltage than it's supposed to be. Next i'll try to find a power supply pinout and test it.

New Battery, no difference. Anyone know where to find a power supply schematic online? Going to test for 12v between pins 1 and 14 when I get a chance. Not looking good.

dunno if they're anything like the Mac pro desktops (i should as there are 5 of em in my server room, but aside from the occasional reboot, they just run) but most mac pro's won't power up properly if the side panel is off. Found that out the hard way after bashing my head against the wall for a couple hours..

The X-Serve 1U rack mounts when the PSU is working still have fans running, while the rest of the machine is in a off or very low power state. If there is no fan activity you can assume 1 of 2 things

Dead logic board

Dead PSU

I work as an Apple tech so i come across these bad boys from time to time.

If you need to get parts, I would recommend finding out the part number (I have dirrect access to apples Global Service Exchange so i can look up parts for you and whatnot)  if you want to attempt to repair the machine.

Once you get the machine running, you can run the AXD (Apple Xserve Dianostics) on the machine which is basically a boot environment that then checks a good chunk of everything.

EDIT: Do you know what year the X-Serve is and is it Intel or a Power PC?
