USB 3.0 MB header TOOOOO BIG

Thread Starter
all,
I simply do not like the USB 3.0 motherboard header coming from the top front of my case. the cables are stiff, and there are two of them...I understand the design, usb3 needs a certain level of shielding,etc....but are there any aftermarket cable extentions or anything that can help to slim down this connection? I am beginning trying to REALLY clean up the inside of my case and thats the first eyesore

if my only option is to unplug it, so be it I guess

any advice?

what im talking about:

TBH, I don't know of anything to slim down the connector. What I can suggest for the cleaning up part is to sleeve the connector up to the header. Based on the size, I believe MDPC-X's Sata sleeve and sata shrink would be the best choice.

At least thats what I intend to do for my upcoming build.

thanks I'll look into it!redface.gif

+1 on the sata shrink and sleeve. You can always stretch out the HS with a needle nose pliers and it will shrink down to what it was supposed to.

Also you can take an exacto knife and trim the edges of the plug carefully to make it fit.

Good idea. Anyone know what the ID is on the sleeving? I don't have any MDPC but I have some 10 & 12mm sleeving.

So I found out that neither 10 nor 12mm sleeving will fit over the USB 3.0 connector on my Switch. I'm not really sure I could even cut down the mobo connector enough to get the cable sleeved. As far as disconnecting at the front panel that's a no go, everything is soldered in place. Soo, I ordered some 16mm sleeving, I'm pretty sure that will do the job.
For any of you that have sleeved your USB 3.0, show us the result!

Can you tell me the size of MDPC-X's sata sleeve. I seriously thought it would be good enough for this connector. Also, post your results as well.
I have no idea what size sleeving MDPC sells and no one replied, I don't know if it's supposed to be a secret or what, lol. I don't have any MDPC sleeving at all, everything on my rig is either modDIY sleeving or paracord. But I know the 12mm sleeving wouldn't fit over the USB 3.0 motherboard connector on my Switch. that's why I ordered the 16mm and I'm thinking it will be plenty big enough. I'll try to get some shots up when I get the 16mm sleeving in and finished. I did use 12mm sleeving for my SATA data cables, though.
Depending on how big your connector is you might get some smaller sleeving over it if you shave it down a little: I didn't think I could cut that much off mine and I didn't really want to do that.

- MDPC carry 1/8 inches sleeves(for standard 14 to 18 gauge wires, like 24 pins ATX, etc...IMHO 1/8 sleeve is too loose for cable below 20, for 20 to 24 WG I use 1/16 sleeves) and 1/2 inches (SATA sleeves)
- Forget about getting a USB 3 header through a SATA sleeve, even twice as big (1 inch sleeve) is too tight
- AFAIK, no "good" sleeving brand (MDPC, Bitspower, HD Kobra, etc..."good" is in bracket because what I mean by "good" is "higher quality than standard", used by modders to sleeve PC cables, obviously Flexo PET is crap compared to Bitspower or MDPC but it's still better than the "standard" sleeving that can be found in electrical goods shops) carry sleeves higher than 1 inch
- I used some "standard" large diameter sleeves to sleeve the USB 3 cables of my case, you can have a look here:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1281107/build-log-simply-black

As you can see, the HS is very long, but to get through the header, the sleeve has to be really large, and therefore it also has to be stretched to the max so that it is not too loose on the cables. I had to use large piece of HS to hold it in place, but if you're very patient, a good trick is to shrink a "ring" of several layers of HS near the header, and then put the sleeve on it and then add the final piece of HS to hold it. It creates a pinch on the sleeves, so that you don't need such a long lenght of HS to hold it in place.

It is, as I write this post, the only way I found to sleeve the USB 3 cables. I'm pessimisitc regarding the option of desoldering/sleeving/resoldering it as the connections are tiny as hell and as AFAIK USB 3 headers are not sold as separate parts. Would love to see any other alternative to do the job though.

Cheers

Well, I'm not sure if you're telling me my modDIY sleeving is crap or not, lol, but I think I can get the 16mm spread over the USB connector if has the same amount of expansion as their smaller sizes. Now whether or not I can pull it tight enough to take out all the slack, I don't know. Anyway I should know next week sometime.
