USB 3.0 MB header TOOOOO BIG - Page 2

No I'm not smile.gif

Actually I had never heard of modDIY and it's the first time that I see modding sleeves above 1 inch ID.
Regarding the quality of these sleeves, I got no clue. I bought mine in an elecrtical goods shop and the quality is very low, especially compared to the Bitspower sitting next to them. However all the sleeves in my case are black so it's not too bad.

You Sir, made my day. It seems that modDIY is based in Hong Kong, where I live, which will save me a lot of money on the small orders (connectors, pins, cables, etc...) I usually have to place through Frozen CPU as the computer shops in Hong Kong are very poor in term of choice.

Cheers

Mandrix, feel free to add me on skype if you like and we can sit down one night and get it all take care of.

Kinda just comes down to finding the right size sleeve and shrink that will fit over it, but like the person before me most likely you will have to stretch the life out of it to get it to conform again.. thumb.gif

Cool! Like I say, I don't know how their sleeving compares to MDPC but it works for me. Strange you've had trouble find things closer, seems to me like that general area of the world sells just about everything there is on Ebay. smile.gif

lol, I never used Skype before. I'm an old throwback, I guess. wink.gif I think the 16mm sleeving will work, I could almost stretch the 12mm around the tip of the USB 3.0 motherboard plug.
Anyway I have some 16mm on the way, if it works it works, if it don't I'll find some use for it since I'm always futzing around with something.
What I really need is a good $25 crimper. tongue.gif

I've placed an order at ModDYI yesterday, including a few feet of 16 and 18mm sleeves to see how they are compared to the cheap stuff I sleeved the USB3 with. I'll let you know how's the quality compared to MDPC or Bitspower.
Regarding the Ebay thing, forget about it, online shopping is almost non-existent in HK/Mainland China. It's an aspect of the Chinese culture, people here simply don't trust the internet, they are convinced that as soon as they'll type their card number their bank account will be hijacked. On top of that, they need to physically see the product they are buying, they also bargain for everything which is not possible with online shopping. All in all, forget about Ebay in China unless you wanna buy some second hand sofas...
Another very frustrating thing is that there's no high-end market for computer there, locals simply don't get the idea of having upscale hardware, therefore even though the products are actually built here they are not available. Very annoying to live in HK and to have to order a piece of hardware produced in Taiwan or China from the US or Europe...
Yeah, it sounds weird having to order from somewhere else the products that are produced there. But I was thinking that some things might be available from Taiwan,Japan or Korea or other places closer than the US.
On the ebay thing it's funny, here you can order everything from 50 tons of steel to whatever from China, lol.

Is there no way to contact modDIY directly? I mean they probably don't have a storefront per sae but maybe they would be amenable to you picking stuff up instead of the added mailing step?
Anyway you could try through their online store messaging, I've found them pretty responsive in the past.
But do let us know about the quality, and you will probably have your order before I get my 16mm as I don't see it reaching New York yet (but that may be the USPS hasn't updated their tracking yet). Usually takes me about a business week to get orders from HK , and of course they ship by air so usually in New York in 2 days.

I hate this connector, especially because the header for it (on my board) is located at the bottom. In the better boards it's between the 24-pin and the gpu so its a bit more convenient.

You have the UD3H? On the UD5H it's in the middle below the 24 pin. But my problem is the Switch 810 has such a long cable I have to loop it in the back to take up the slack. The back of my rig is so busy I don't see a good way to organize it. It was hard enough to get everything in tight enough to clear the door, especially the Xstation power hub. I guess I crimped my power connectors well because I have to bend the crap out of the wires to clear the door.

Modular PSU is the key to get rid of the main clutter. It's a one time investment that makes your life a whole lot easier.

About the usb 3 cable...I think I have an idea but not sure it'll work, we'll need assurance from experienced users/modders.

Moddiy sells a usb 3 female connector:

Since the original plastic connector is annoyingly stiff and bulky, this could be the solution. The plan is to cut off the original connector and rebuild the cable end to fit this connector, then use a nice heatshrink to cover it up and you're done. tongue.gif

I do have a modular psu. Also lights, pumps, 13 fans, well you get the idea. Lot's of connections and wiring. I'll stick with the current plan on the USB 3.0, my sleeving should be here soon. But by all means if you decide to rebuild your cable, do let us know how it works out. That's just way more effort than I want to put into it.
