USB 3.0 MB header TOOOOO BIG - Page 3

I got the 16mm sleeving in today, so I went ahead and sleeved the USB 3.0 cable up to the front panel. I don't believe any smaller sleeving would have worked for this connector.
The heat shrink I had was very hard to stretch, so I ended up using a shorter piece than I normally would. Anyway, I'm satisfied with the outcome considering how I had to do it.

So 16mm is it. Can I get tech-flex in that size? What's the size in inches?

Lucky you, I wish my header was located near the 24-pin. :\

Well 5/8" is 15.875mm, so if you can find that I'd say you're good to go. But it's all going to depend on how dense a weave the sleeving is, because it has to stretch pretty far. Like I said I got mine from modDIY, and I have no idea how far other sleeving is going to stretch.
The heat shrink I have is FTW PC's SATA heat shrink but it's too small, really. I had to cut a short piece and stretch the heck out of it to get it over the plug. I would highly recommend to order some larger heat shrink, but it's doable with "SATA" heat shrink if you really stretch it.
What I did on the front panel end was just ziptie it really tight, since getting the panel apart was far more involved than what I wanted to get into: but yours might be easier, and often there will be two connectors on the front panel. If you can get them off it would make sleeving the USB 3.0 way easier, and if your wire is the 2 piece you could actually use much smaller sleeving, like SATA size or 10-12mm.

I ordered some 1" shrink, I think that is going to work out better for the USB 3.0 and I can get a longer wrap that will withstand being plugged/unplugged over time.

About the usb 3 cable...I think I have an idea but not sure it'll work, we'll need assurance from experienced users/modders.
Moddiy sells a usb 3 female connector:

Since the original plastic connector is annoyingly stiff and bulky, this could be the solution. The plan is to cut off the original connector and rebuild the cable end to fit this connector, then use a nice heatshrink to cover it up and you're done. tongue.gif

I'm not sure if I like this idea...USB 3.0 is pretty touchy in terms of having proper resistance connections and adequate shielding...even if you physically reconnected all the individual wires, I'm not sure you would still get 100% functionality...however, please let us know if it works! (do before and after thouroughput (sp? i hate that word) testing)

cheers

My uncle is an expert when it comes to cables. I'll consult him on this manner but I'm aware of what it takes to make a good cable. Shielding of course, is an important part.thumb.gif

Just giving ya a slight update. I took my idea seriously and removed the bulky usb 3 connector from the cable (on my new fractal r4).. I will be soldering it to a new connector soon. After taking off the original casing it became so much more flexible and easy to manage. Looks great actually.

Great. Let us know how it works out!
I'm satisfied with the way I did mine. Wish I could find a better way to do the HD Audio, but it's no big deal since I never use phones or mic's anyway.

yes, please keep us posted! So far I really like flash2021's solution, but curious to see how your idea works.

I've been shopping for sleeve lately and am quickly finding out how specific it all is. I might order some of this to try on my USB 3.0 header (16mm, MDPC quality... what could be bad??): http://de.mdpc-x.com/mdpc-sleeve/sleeve-kits-+-werkzeuge/sleeve-kits/schlauch-sleeve-kit.htm
